    1. Re: [BK] How to compare individuals? (De-duplication)
    2. John Steed
    3. To John Bibby Do you have BK 6.5 If so, copy your database into another folder (so you have two copies of the same database) Then run BK 6.5 and pick File, Utilities, Compare two databases. You can show two people side by side and it will say exactly what is different. I plan to have a different routine to compare one database with itself to find duplicates, but the above procedure should work for now. 3. If you have Windows 7 it's relatively easy. Create a second BK folder under C: Install a copy of BK6 into that folder. Copy your data files into the folder. Then you can run both copies of BK simultaneously. Drag the tab for one copy to the left half of the screen and drag the tab for the other copy to the right half. Then you can pull up individuals in each copy of BK to compare. Just make sure that any changes you make are in the copy you intend to keep. [] If you mean things like whether printing landscape or portrait, you may find you have to change the default in your printer driver, outside BK; it (BK) doesn't seem to retain this, even between previews sometimes. (I haven't tried since having 6.5.1, but this was the case up to last time I tried printing, which was a month or three ago.) -- J. P. Gilliver. 3. To John Bibby Where do you want to see that brief descriptor? On the Edit screen? On the printed reports? Which reports? If you are not using the Ref Number field, you can put something in the Description field for that Ref Number event and it will show on a lot of reports and on the Edit screen. Yes we used many differennt thing to give the excact information, but in book reports it is not any good idea to make a lot of them. We used BK as the complete database for the family and then want to give information away to relatives in a "normal" without many speciall effects. I used " " for spcial information in the same way as I also use ( ) [ ] In the name tab there are mostly also Word as "known as" and many others, total 19 way to add information to a name. E.g. I use "other name" as "collector" for all misspelling that we find in sources I miss easy way to express what neme is "normaly used" so here we in Scandinavia with an underline for those names. As name written a 100-200 yhears ago are a little different we also nee a way to express a "normalized" name. That is used in our local history books about family and area. Norwat has a lot of them. I believe more than other countries if also looks at hvow small Norway is comparing other countries. And many in USA and other countries haave Ancestors in Norway. And for the history the same person have different speeling and even other names in USA comparing their birthname. All this have to have a place in the database so it can be easy to find the correct person and family whether we see it from USA or Norway :) Similar I believe is for all other countries -- Otto Jørgensen http://www.bkwin.info/ All email is checked by NORTON

I don't have anything set for "print where" in either database so I am a little lost as to how to stop this from coming up. Any ideas? Lyn

Pick Range of numbers and pick everyone 1 to the end Then near the bottom right is an option to "De-Select people" Click that option Then click Range and pick 200 - 330 or whoever you do not want. The number of selected people will be smaller then.
