[] Make a new directory (folder) with a copy of the databases in it, then from BK main menu, either: use File | Open Database (or just Ctrl+O) and type the new folder name in (may have to give full path), or: File | Open list of databases (Alt-f, p), where you can also type in the path to the new folder, or you can (create and) edit a list of such folders. There is also an automatic search for such folders: File | Utilities > Find BK6 database, but that just crashed for me: I have mine on D:, which I pointed it to; it found my database, and carried on searching as one might expect, then popped up a little box that said Path not found, OK, but when I OKd it, BK went back to its main menu and popped up another little box File not found, OK, which when clicked kept reappearing, and I eventually had to crash BK from Task Manager; fortunately it seems not to have damaged the database. So I'd stick to one of the first two methods. Of course, once you have duplicated your database, the two will not be linked. -- J. P. Gilliver. 3. Kay I routinely backup BK to a (1) seperate partition on the BK host computer (same physical hard drive but looks to the computer as a seperate hard drive), (2) to an external hard drive connected to the host computer and to (3) a hard drive on another computer via a network. All seem to work well. I have not had to restore to recover from a failure but I do use the different locations (most typically the external hard drive on the host computer) to place a copy of my data for experimental purposes. I should be that rigorous with all the rest of my data. ----- Original Message ----- From: "N & K Chestnut" <nkopportunity@gorge.net> Subject: Re: [BK] Backup not possible > Could an external hard drive be an acceptable place to send Backups? > > Kay C. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: John Steed > To: bk@rootsweb.com > Sent: 2011-11-15 03:04 > Subject: Re: [BK] Backup not possible > > > To Gilles Paquette > > It is possible that the drive is so large, that BK is getting back a > false > number when it checks the free space. 3. Gilles, Have them reboot, don’t load any programs. Then have them double click on My Computer, then select the c: hard drive and right click, then select properties. Look at the graph and the information, used and free space. I don't think their problem is with BK, but with being out of space for some reason. Have them empty their recycle bin and check again. Also storing you backup on the same hard drive as your live files is a bad practice. What happens if their hard drive goes bad? They lose everything including backups. 3. Thanks for your thoughts on this. I think the idea of a spreadsheet is quite a useful one particularly for something like an elusive baptism where you might search many parishes and cover a range of dates for each, or if you are looking for all occurrences of a specific surname. The things I am conscious of not recording are things like online probate indexes and WW1 medal cards where I occasionally have a browse for names of interest - I don't always log that I looked at these indexes and did not find Joseph Bloggs. As I said, I use 'to do' where I am filling in some information and think "Next time I'm in xxx I'll check for yyyy". I must start adding some 'to do's as I'm doing them! 1. [BK] How to use option "Media"
    2. Max van Dam
    3. Dear members on the list, I work already for many years with BK. I have now version 6.5.3 I did never use the option of Media. A little bit lazy of me to learn it. By the recent discussion on the list I was a little bit curious about the opportunities of Media for me. My working system is: 1. All the research, documents and so on I save it in my desktop computer. 2. All the changes is my database (BK) I bring it in on my laptop. 3. On daily base I bring a copy of my BK-database from my laptop to my desktop. 4. Weekly I send a copy of my database from my desktop to my son in an other place in the country. This is the way I'm working. My database is almost 75.000 names. Now to the option Media: Questions: 1. If I put a media-file to a person in BK about a file situated on an external disc (WD) can I see that file also if I have put my BK-database on an other computer? 2. How do you use the option "add Email" With my best regards, Max van Dam Rechovot Israel http://www.maxvandam.info/

I think if I record them anywhere, I put them in notes - "the Fred Bloggs shown in xyz parish register is not this person; see such-and-such where he's shown as being born to different parents", or something like that; sometimes in general notes, where relevant in event-specific notes. But it's definitely the exception rather than the rule. I tend to think of the To Do area as for things I know about but haven't done - for example I record there a link to a webpage that shows the spouse/children/whatever of a side branch of the family which I might enter sometime, but which are not of much interest to me at the moment. But everyone uses the To Do area - and the two sorts of note area! - in their own slightly-different way: I'm not saying your use is wrong in any way. Some people use To Do to remind them of things like "if I ever visit abc record office again, check ...". -- J. P. Gilliver. 3. Ruth, I created an Internet Research Log which you can do in your word processor, or a spreadsheet, or a database. The Log contains columns for Date, URL, Seeking, Success, and Zip (Dud). You can keep this log/file open while you are searching and easily copy/paste the URL into the appropriate space and make your notes on what you found, or didn't find. I just put an X in the Zip column if I didn't find anything. That said, I am not very good at keeping it up, but when I do, it helps.
