[] However, in BK - as opposed to Windows - I think ? can match a whole forename or surname, _if_ you're using the five-letter short form. Would I be right that the only three people "? Hartas" finds are ones where you have actually entered ? as the forename, whereas "? Harta" finds anyone (probably including the first three) where the surname is or begins with Harta, including ones where you have entered a forename other than just "?"? -- J. P. Gilliver. 3. To John Bibby 1. When you search for that name use ?? for the two letters. Search for John B??lby That will match ie and ei and any other two letters. 2. In the top Name field put the name you want it printed on reports. Then click the Names tab in the middle of the screen, and Add Name at the bottom and add the second name there as Also Known As type. 2. Hi John, I have Windows 7 and had already formatted the CD and it did not work. So then I tried a different CD and have succeeded. Thanks for advice, John. Also thanks to Jim for input. Rita To Rita (greenways6) If you are backing up to a CD-R then there are different requirements depending on your version of Windows If you have Windows XP then do not click "copy to D:" but instead click the bottom button "Copy to CD-R with Win XP" If you have Windows 7 then before you try to backup to the CD have Windows format the CD. Go to Start, Computer, and Right click the CD drive and pick the option to format the CD. After that, then have BK backup to the D drive. John Steed

The BK6 help file says: "You may type the first five letters of the first name then a space and the first five letters of the last name to find anyone. If there are a lot of people with similar names you may type the first 10 letters of the first and last name." The "?" wildcard in Windows matches only one character. For multiple characters use the "*" wildcard. A search for "* harta" or "* hartas*" should each find all of them. Dale H. Cook, Member, NEHGS and MA Society of Mayflower Descendants; Plymouth Co.
