If I know an event happened in the 3rd quarter of a year I just input the date as "Q3 1875" (without the quotes) and accept that it will come up in red and tell me the date is invalid. All that means is that the date format does not comply with the format I have chosen. The date actually prints as Q3 1875 on all the reports I have used, so I don't see a problem. The samples you show are all invalid because they do not show a full date. The idea of showing invalid date was to indicate that the information was not complete. Regarding the issue of only having the quarter, I use the option of showing a date range. So for a 1st quarter event I would put 01011877 to 31031877 in the date range box showing between these dates. I realise that this may not cover those events that have occurred at the end of the previous quarter but were not registered till this quarter but I am able to tell by looking at this entry that that is the quarter of registration. To J. P. Gilliver If you want the date to contain a _ then ignore the "invalid date" message. The message "invalid date" just means that date does not exist as exactly one day on a calendar. If you see "invalid date" and were trying to type one day on a calendar, then you may have typed it wrong. So in your case, just ignore the message. John Steed ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. To Rennie Brown Here is how to find the people that "new lo" is attached to. Go to the main BK screen and pick File, Locations, Change locations globally On the top line type: new lo On the bottom line type: new loxx Click the Start button. That will change that location name to: new loxx After you do that, go to the main screen and pick Lists, Word Search, click the Any field tab, and type: new loxx Then click Make List to Edit. That will show you everyone with that location. After you know what that location should be, go to the main BK screen and pick File, Locations, Change locations globally. On the top line type: new loxx and on the bottom line type the location you want it to be. John Steed ----- Original Message ----- From: "R L Brown" <wiseguy_wv@yahoo.com> To: <bk@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 21, 2012 2:01 PM Subject: [BK] Locations by Person There is a convenient BK feature that can identify all the persons to whom a particular source is attached. Is there a way to do the same thing with locations? I routinely take the shortcut of entering just the first few letters of a location, pressing F8, then selecting the desired existing location. But I've found long after the fact that there are several locations that I inadvertently created by accepting only the partial location name. For example, "new lo" rather that "New London, Chester Co, PA" or "New London, Huron Co, OH" or "New London County, CT." If I knew who the "new lo" is attached to, I could do a global search & replace. But since I don't know that, I wouldn't know which location to change it to. I could do a word search for "new lo" but that will also return all the more complete locations, and I can't narrow it down by event since I don't know that either. All I know is that I have a handful of partial location names somewhere in my large database that I'd like to correct. Any suggestions? In cases like that I use the following methods. Either ABT 31031851 = ABT 31 Mar 1851 or if it is not precise, the datarange ABT 31031851 ABT 30061851 = happens between ABT 31 Mar 1851 and 30 Jun 1851 To my opinion BK has enough opportunities to mention the information which you have available. Hi JP, For the occupation event, you can enter this twice. So Occupation would appear twice, each with a different date or date range. An explanation in Notes and/or footnotes would work here. An event doesn't have to have a date attached. I'm assuming your entry refers to Occupation. That could simply be entered as Coal Miner with the supposed date range explained in Notes. It might not be readily apparent on the Edit page but would be obvious in any of the reports. -----Original Message----- From: J. P. Also, if we're talking about date ranges: there are currently two options: event happened between the two dates, and the two dates are start date and end date. I'd like another option - not sure what I'd call it - for two dates that are inside the event range. For example, I know my Solomon Robinson was a coal miner in 1861 and in 1851, but that's neither an event that happened between the two, nor that started in 1851 and ended in 1861. It probably started before 1851 and ended after 1861. -- J. P. Gilliver. UMRA: 1960/<1985 MB++G.5AL-IS-P--Ch++(p)Ar@T0H+Sh0!:`)DNAf A man does not have to be an angel in order to be saint.
