    3. Hi Jane, Are you trying to do this from within BK, if so it will only create the shortcut. What I do is: close BK open the location folder where your BK data files are open the picture file below your data file (It is preferable to keep the pictures separate to the actual data) Copy the photos you want to move from the desktop (Ctrl C) Paste them into the pictures folder of BK (Ctrl V) When they are copied you can delete the files on your desktop, (I always keep a folder of copies of the pictures in BK separate to the BK folder in case something happens to my database) Close all open folders Open BK Go to the person you want to link the photos to and follow the procedure using the Picture folder below your Data files as the location of the photos. Hope this helps Bye Karlena -----Original Message----- From: bk-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bk-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Jane Gillespie Sent: Saturday, 25 February 2012 11:40 AM To: Brothers Keeper List Subject: [BK] Move Picture File From Desktop to BK I have 3 jpg picture files that are on the desktop of my computer. I suspect I'll continue, since I have so many already entered, using ____1955 (which BK reformats to __ ___ 1955), with "Q1" in the comment field, but since Malcolm has discovered that "Q1 1955" is to some extent parsed by BK, I might start using it. Though looking at your example again, Malcolm, you say 'I have an accurate birth date of a great aunt as 26 May 1872 and a death date as Q1 1955. Her age in the BK database is shown as "83+/-" and in the family group sheet it says "died at age 83".' I suspect BK is getting the 1955, but not the Q1 - have you other examples (with different quarters)? Because if she died in Q1 1955, that would be _before_ her 83rd birthday, which by usual convention (in England anyway, and 'I think'), would be described as 'died at age 82' (or of course 'in her 83rd year'). But at least it suggests that BK is correctly recognising the year, even if it isn't in DDMMYYYY or DD MMM YYYY format. [I, too, only use GEDCOM for uploading - the BK database is my reference source.] I do have an acknowledgement from Ancestry - about a year or more ago, now, I think - that their way of showing quarters in search results (i. e. "Mar 1956" when what they really mean is "Jan-Mar 1956") is misleading. (They did point out that you get the full Jan-Mar if you look at the record, but acknowledged that it was unclear in the search result.) -- J. P. Gilliver. 3. Hi, Malcolm et al For dates obtained from the UK Registers of births, marriages and deaths I would suggest using the prefix BEF. So that for an event found in Q1 1955, I put BEF 31/3/1955. This makes clear when the event occurred and more importantly, it is a 'valid' date! I only use GedCom to upload my database into another programme to allow me easy access for reference when visiting archives. So, the use of Q1 1955, for example, tells me that the date was obtained from the UK register of Births Marriages and Deaths (BMD) and this shows up in BK as an invalid date because it is not in the format (or cannot be converted into the format) I specified i.e. DDMMYYYY. Is there a way to do the same thing with locations? I routinely take the shortcut of entering just the first few letters of a location, pressing F8, then selecting the desired existing location. But I've found long after the fact that there are several locations that I inadvertently created by accepting only the partial location name. For example, "new lo" rather that "New London, Chester Co, PA" or "New London, Huron Co, OH" or "New London County, CT." If I knew who the "new lo" is attached to, I could do a global search & replace. But since I don't know that, I wouldn't know which location to change it to. I could do a word search for "new lo" but that will also return all the more complete locations, and I can't narrow it down by event since I don't know that either. All I know is that I have a handful of partial location names somewhere in my large database that I'd like to correct. Any suggestions? 3. I have just looked at the GedCom file for my Great Aunt, Kezia Webb. Her death date is shown in the GedCom as "Q1 1955" and that is what has been imported into the other programme. Whilst Q1 1955 may not be recognised in the GedCom as a proper date and therefore not used in calculations, it certainly imports the information as I want to see it. If a date such as "12 des 1955" is imported into the GedCom and not converted to the proper date as 12 Dec 1955, then I am correct in my assumption that the GedCom only imports dates as strings of text and what is typed in the date for any event is exactly what is exported via GedCom. Maybe it is exported as a string of text and not as a date. if I telle that the death of a person is før 1955 That will allso be importaed but that does not mean that the GEDCOM is correct done. You must look at the GEDCOM What if you tell før q1 1855 the Gedcom will have the same If you say 12 des 1955 the gedcom will tell the same and with the import it is mnot transformed to 12 dec 1955 if you still have the language to english -- Otto Jørgensen http://www.bkwin.info/ All email is checked by NORTON

    3. I have just checked my GedView programme on my iPhone into which I had previously imported my BK database by GedCom. The Great Aunt I referred to is shown with a full birth date of 26 May 1872 and a death date of Q1 1955, exactly as in my BK database. >From my experience therefore GedCom DOES accurately export an "illegal" date. Maybe it is exported as a string of text and not as a date. All the best. Er could like to have that to be trafered to 1 jan to 31 mar on the other hand we do also have periods as Winter, spring, summer etc and neither of them are legal. When I say legal it is according to transferring by gedcom. The red warning is telling that you have unlegal date; it should accept 1955 jan 1955 12 jan 1955 and also date range using ABT BEF BET AFT and also translate that to natunal language all over when changing language in the program -- Otto Jørgensen http://www.bkwin.info/ All email is checked by NORTON

    3. In my previous message I indicated I use "Q3 1875" in the date field. I can confirm that using Q3 1875 in a date field DOES produce an accurate calculation of age in BK and in Group Sheets. The date is recognised simply as 1875. For example; I have an accurate birth date of a great aunt as 26 May 1872 and a death date as Q1 1955. Her age in the BK database is shown as "83+/-" and in the family group sheet it says "died at age 83". I was not aware that I could turn off the red warning, but am happy for it to be displayed and I ignore it where appropriate as in Q1 1955. All the best. I'd thought, since the format with the "_"(s) in is parsed by BK (I started using it after reading the manual!), that the "Invalid date" message might be restricted for something BK couldn't parse - such as one too many or few symbols. > >So in your case, just ignore the message. > >John Steed > Will do!
