John Steed: Way back on 13 Sep 2010 I wrote a message stating "I seem to have locked myself out of editing a lengthy note on one of my entries in BK. I know how to change that in Windows XP, but cannot seem to find how to change it from read only in the BK program. Can you give me instructions? Janice Which you responded with 5 steps to take which I did, but it still remained read only. After a few messages back and forth you said on September 16, 2010 "Do not worry about Win 7 yet. I have a way to fix the file names when you get Win 7." Well, I now have Win 7 and I need your instructions on how to remove "read only" in BK Notes. You might want to go to BK Archives to review our complete exchange. Thank you for any help you can provide. Janice Meredith
Thank you for your reply. I guess I have a problem as on the bottom of my first screen (the front page) in BK, it has C\:Program Files\Brothers Keeper 6/Bro keep 6. I remember seeing on this forum once that your data should not be under Program Files. The question, of course, is how do I change that and where should the data be? I never have any problem with BK and I use it (and have used it) since probably 1999 or earlier. I'm extremely leery of trying to do any changes myself and I don't know any local people that use BK. -----Original Message----- From: bk-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:bk-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Otto Jørgensen Sent: Thursday, March 15, 2012 12:24 PM To: bk@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [BK] Installing 6.4 over 6.3 On Thu, 15 Mar 2012 11:36:44 -0500, "Bonnie Woolverton" <bonniejw@embarqmail.com> wrote: >I know, this is probably a stupid question, but better to ask and be sure. > >I had used BK 6.3 for many years (unregistered). Yes, That could be the common thread. I did not keep track of all the errors but did remember some and they all had a second or third spouse set as primary. I know, this is probably a stupid question, but better to ask and be sure. I had used BK 6.3 for many years (unregistered). In 2010 I paid for registration and received the 6.4 version on CD and the user's manual. However, I have done nothing with the CD yet. In the manual it does not give any instructions about installing the new version over an older version. I assume I would follow the directions given to install (as though on a computer without any version) and it would, therefore, simply install over the old version? I want to be sure this is what to do. Thanks in advance for any help.
To Joe joe968@comcast.net Thanks for the report, I will check it out. Do you have your main database set to show a specific spouse for some people? Perhaps that is what is causing the problem in the Compare routine. Anyway, I will do some checking to try to find the problem. using BK ver 6.5.7- While comparing two databases with 79,000 names that I knew only had a few differences I got many errors reported. I then made a copy of my master file and did a compare and still got many errors, all involve persons with multiple marriages. The left screen has a person with 2nd or 3rd spouse showing but right screen is showing same person but with the first spouse so they don't match. If I manually change the right screen to the correct spouse they then match. I believe the problem only occurs if second spouse has lower bk number than first spouse. Maybe something for John to check. Joe

To John Bibby Open your current database, and from the main screen pick File, Utilities, Compare two databases. Then compare to the older database that has that person. Then show the person on the right and copy him to the left. To johnbibbyjohnbibby@gmail.com When you do a Backup, it asks where you want the backup to go. So you can make a new backup to a new folder (click Pick a different drive, and create a new folder like C:\BKMARCH and then backup to there) If you make a compressed backup, the file is called BK6DATA.ZIP If you do not make a compressed backup, but pick COPY then it copies the nine files that end with .DT6 to the backup location. Oh - I have just deleted an important person Is there any easy way to "undelete"? If not - what extension do my backup files have? (I must save them before I close presumably - otherwise my new backup will overwrite the files I want for y important person.) Thanks for any help JOHN
Depends on how you backed up but my guess it zip. Hello Jane, I have also used some images from that website in BK. I downloaded the relevant pages as PDF, named them with newspaper name, date and page, and then added it in the Media tab to the person mentioned in the article. Hope it works for you as well. Hi, A while back, John explained how to eliminate some branches and at the same time keeping some people when doing a Gedcom export but I can't find this thread doing a search in the archives. Can someone please send me on the right track? Thanks. Gilles Paquette
