Thank you John, Fotunately, that friend had a recent backup that he restored. He wrote me that he had to re-enter about 100 individuals in his restored database. What puzzled me is the "xcode= 181855" part of the error message. This is not covered in your manual (the one I translated in french). Thanks again for your fast response. To Gilles Paquette That file is damaged and needs to be repaired by me, or else the friend needs to Restore a recent Backup copy that is not damaged. Have the friend make a new backup to a new CD or a new folder (do not write over a previous backup) Then if the friend has a recent good backup, pick File, Restore database and restore the good backup and then reenter changes since that backup. If there is no recent good backup, let me know. John Steed ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gilles de C. Hi, A friend had a power faileure at home while using BK. Now, when starting BK he gets this message: "file: BKEVENT.DT6 FileI/O, Btrieve error 2 xcode= 181855" and upon closing BK he gets this other message: "bkevent.dt6 readlast stat= 2". An irretrievable error or one that can be corrected (fairly) easily? Thanks. Gilles Paquette

IV can at least display - I'm not sure about edit - some of the other comment formats too. Note BK's grown a new button on the picture menu, open in default picture viewer; you may find this more useful than BK's own picture viewer, if you've got IrfanView as your default (or probably most other picture viewers - I haven't tried xnview, but I think most modern picture viewer/editor software has better zooming, for example, facilities than the BK one, as well of course as the comment editing facility). -- J. To Rick Beitler OK, I thought you were getting unwanted comments and wanted them to stop. If you want to change the comments and have them show, then you need a program that can edit the JPG comments. There are 2 or 3 different types of "comments" that you can add to jpg pictures. BK can only show one of those types of comments. (BK can not print the comment, but it can show when you view the picture full screen) One program that can edit the JPG comments is XnView which you can download from http://www.xnview.com/ Run XnView and open the picture then pick Edit, Edit comment. Rick, I have found this comment feature to be a great asset when used to your advantage. I use Irfan as my prefered image program and I imagine other programs will have a similar feature. In Irfan I load the image and then click on Image, Information and Comment. What is irritating you should now be visible and can be deleted but in its place you can the also insert a comment of your own choice. Rather like writing the names on the back of a photo you can now write whatever appeals to you and it stays with the photo. -- Jaq BENADIE PO Box 2337, Pinetown, 3600 Ph 031 - 708 3746 : Cell 073 - 560 0657 Fax 0865 197 978 jaqb64@gmail.com

To Betty Young Bray The convert from BK 5 to BK 6 will work fine if all of the BK 5 data is on the computer and in the correct places. It works best if you can run the BK 5 program and the pictures and text files are there, then you stop BK 5 and start BK 6 and do the convert. If you can not run BK 5 on that computer, then it is important that you put the data in the correct folders where BK 5 wanted them to be. Then do the convert. For example, is F15.TXT in the folder on this computer where it was on the old computer? Are the pictures in the exact folder where they were on the old computer? If you are not able to put the files where they were when BK 5 was working, then let me know and I will give you a way to work around the problem. [] This reminds me of something I have been thinking for some time - for BK, not GedCom: how difficult would it be to make the pathnames relative to where the main BK database is? At present, if they're moved independently, all the pathnames have to be changed within BK. If the concern is that some pictures (etc.) might _not_ be "below" the database (e. g. on a network drive), perhaps something could be done based on whether the path has a colon in it, or starts with a backslash - "pictures\mum.jpg" would be relative, but "N:\videos\grandma's silver.mpg" wouldn't. This would allow a whole BK database _including_ a lot of its media files to be moved as a whole (even within the same computer), without having to change pathnames. Just a thought. -- J. P.
