I was looking over old reports this morning and discovered an old favorite, my Tiny Tafel report dated many moons ago. I then examined my copy of Brother's Keeper and low and behold John still provides for the creation of this report. I then went to Google and searched on the "Tafel Matching System" . . . all the information that came forward was really old. I was really trying to find out if anyone has picked up the ball and maintains a system to compare reports for users of common research. No dice . . . Is there any one of you who has found a productive use of this reporting technique? In my estimation it makes a great deal of sense and it seems like it might be really useful . . . it could be a succinct way of communicating our entire research knowledge in an abbreviated display for messaging. I recently switched to Windows 7. I have BK 6.5 (registered.) When I backup my data, including media, I get "Error 75 Path/File access error Access denied" for eight .jpg files (all 1940 Census pages) which were downloaded under Windows 7. BK6 can show them to me but I can't back them up. These files are in C:\Brother's Keeper 6\Data\Media. I set permissions for BK6 to allow full control, modify, read & execute, read, and write. What else should I look at/do? To Michael palekaiko@gmail.com How did you delete the text file? Did you go to BK and go to Edit and show the text file and at the bottom click "delete link to file"? Or did you just delete the file from your hard drive? To all BK users and John. Recently, I've been cleaning up some of my photos, media and text files. I noticed that if I delete a text file, it is possibly associated with a photo or media file. My simplistic way of thinking, if the text file has been deleted, why does BK allow a link, even though the text file has been deleted? This only shows up when making a backup. I think it's error 53 or 58. Thanks in advance. Michael

Hi Michael When you use the source, you will see two different colored sections. The GREY stays with the source. The YELLOW is for that instance only, and stays just with the person. Example: For a census record, I would use the GREY for the year, District and such. I would use the YELLOW for the page and line number information. Hi John, Many thanks for the response, no great problem just an irritation that they operate differently. regards Keith ---------------------------------------- > From: brothers_keeper@msn.com > To: bk@rootsweb.com > CC: keithdorey@hotmail.com > Subject: Re: [BK] Cursor location on note edit > Date: Fri, 20 Apr 2012 11:32:23 -0400 > > To Keith Dorey > > Yes, currently you will have to click the mouse where you want the cursor > when returning to the Event Notes screen. > > I am not sure if I will be able to fix that since that screen works > differently from the Edit screen where I was able to keep the cursor in the > same place for the note. > > John Steed

To Keith Dorey Yes, currently you will have to click the mouse where you want the cursor when returning to the Event Notes screen. I am not sure if I will be able to fix that since that screen works differently from the Edit screen where I was able to keep the cursor in the same place for the note. I know I'm doing something wrong, please help. Just recently, have I begun using the "S" as a way to document the source of photos and those items I have in the media section. I can create the source, and then I place and check in the box for comments, followed by close. My intention is to use this source (with the comment) for other items. However, when I use the same source, there is no comment. What am I doing wrong? Is there a mechanism that will allow me to do what I want? Thanks, Michael Diamant
Hi John, Found a minor problem when editing a note attached to a picture on the picture tab. When in edit the cursor location is lost when you flip to another window to copy some text that you want to paste into the note. On return to the note edit you have to select the point for the paste. This works fine for the main note edit under the notes tab where the cursor is returned to the point it was at and you can just paste in the text. Using version 6.5.4. Regards Keith

Hi, A french speaking user pointed to me that he has a problem with the "Ancestor Chart" and I replicated the problem, both in french and english. Withscreens1024 by 768 or larger, on the Page Setup when selecting "Multiple page linked charts" (last option) and on the Fields to include tab "Standard ancestor numbers", the last column shows an Anhentafel number of 30 for all ancestors. A clue or a coming correction? Gilles Paquette
Thanks for the various suggestions on how to show the surname is unknown. No one way is the only way. What is important that you be consistent. And thanks, John, for telling me how to do it the way I do it. Carole

To Carole Edwards Caruso Yes, the [ ] is used by BK to enclose a 2 part or 3 part last name. Then BK removes the [ ] when printing reports. If you want to change that, then run BK 6.5 and go to File, Options. Then press Shift+F8 on the keyboard. It will pop up a message saying it will use { } instead of [ ] After that, then you can print the [ ] characters in names. The em dash is no problem because the printer code works fine in BK. It does not show up properly in the database on screen, but prints properly. However, the square brackets are a problem in BK. No matter what I do they will not print. Is there a solution? Thanks. I have always used the convention FNU = First Name Unknown LNU = Last Name Unknown UNKNOWN = No Name Known Works for me and allows for searching without finding a lot of question marks. I did have a question from one person who wanted to know if LNU was an oriental name :) Pip.
Hi, Square brackets are used to surround surnames composed of two or more names that are not joined by a dash. For example you have someone with a surname of Jones Smith and you want to sort by the surname Jones, you use square bracquets: [Jones Smith]. These square bacquets do not print when used in the Name field. Personnaly, I replace an unknown name with an N followed by three dots: N...; dots print and are also used in sorting.
