Thanks John and John. I ended up printing out ancestor and descendant charts including BK numbers to make sure I knew all of them. From these, in the program, I worked back from children to parents, crossing each one off on the chart as s/he was deleted. After that the program prompted me to I re-index. Bill PS. Some part of this branch had been imported by a Gedcom from a tree I had put together in Ancestry from its hints. It was remarkable how many mistakes I had made there (duplicated people, wrong mother, etc.). -----Original Message----- From: John Steed [mailto:brothers_keeper@msn.com] Sent: Thursday, 10 January 2019 1:14 AM To: bk@rootsweb.com Subject: [BK] Re: Delete a branch? [] I can't think of a way; I'd be interested in any suggestion. In the meantime, if you delete the root of the join, _finding_ the others may be aided by use of the "unconnected branch" utility - from the Edit screen, Reports, Other, unlinked branch, Preview. This will identify one at a time - tedious, but for about 20 off, achievable. (You can probably reduce the number by working from the oldest ancestor, and also - depending on whether the unwanted branch was mostly added at once or over a period of time - judicious use of the + and - buttons.) I have a large unlinked branch, but - mainly because of the effort involved in gathering it - I'm leaving it in, as I suspect I _will_ get a link between it and my main tree sometime, if only a marriage. The previous thread explained how to use the "find secondary parent" function. I didn't know that. When I tried someone in my tree with secondary parents, it showed both sets as "Natural Parents" I fixed it, but is this an error in the BK program to allow that to happen? I don't think you can have two sets of natural parents. Perhaps the program should flash some sort of warning if you try to enter both set as "Natural". Not sure what the alternatives are if you don't know their status - "Unknown Relationship" maybe.
I had to do something similar about an hour ago: Get child up on edit screen it should show father1 and mother 1 From top bar Find Show secondary parents it will switch to showing adoptive parents Find show parent type Select 'Adoptive' for both father and mother Hope this works for you Sue
Place the child in edit field. Add Parents. There is an option to show adopted. It gets hidden from BK because you've renamed it. BK looks at an internal list of databases named BKPATH.TXT, and if the entry isn't there then it doesn't see it. And yes, of course you can name the new database anything you like. Add the new name to BKPATH.TXT (File-->Open list of databases-->Edit). You compare two databases by going to File-->Utilities-->Compare two databases. Good luck! Chas. Dobie. I like it (but don't understand why it gets deleted from BK). I can create a new folder (same name 2). What is the regime to compare these, or any, database folders? -----Original Message----- From: Charles Dobie [mailto:cdobie@superaje.com] Sent: Wednesday, 2 January 2019 11:35 AM To: bk@rootsweb.com Subject: [BK] Re: Emptying or deleting a database Bill, Off the top of my head -- I would rename your database (rename the folder) thus deleting it from BK, then import a new gedcom, giving it the same name as the previous one. That way you'll have a good backup with the re-named database if something goes wrong. You'll also be able to use BK's compare feature to check records, again if something goes wrong. Chas. Dobie. Chas is right, but rather than rename your existing BK database create a new one with the newest gedcom from Ancestry. Then compare them if needed. Create a new folder name it like Bill-1-1-2019Open bk there and import the Ancestry gedcom Jim Sent from Yahoo Mail on Android On Tue, Jan 1, 2019 at 6:26 PM, Bill Webster<wbwebster@internode.on.net> wrote: I have been researching and setting up a tree at Ancestry for a friend. I don't know about others but I find it near impossible to get a satisfactory output within Ancestry to get an overall view (tree with details) of what has been achieved. For this reason over a month ago I set up a new database in BK and imported a gedcom there from Ancestry. The present problem is that I have progressed the findings in Ancestry and want to see how it now looks. I am thinking, can I delete the contents of the existing BK database and import a new gedcom into it? Or would I best completely delete that database and create a replacement? Bill, Off the top of my head -- I would rename your database (rename the folder) thus deleting it from BK, then import a new gedcom, giving it the same name as the previous one.
