To John Bibby In your case, you have a last name with either a - or without a - The problem is that BK normally thinks the last word is the last name. So the space tells BK that the last name for the first one is just Ficklin So for the first person the last name is Ficklin And for your second person the last name is Berney-Ficklin When you do the search it can not match different last names of "Berney-Ficklin" and "Ficklin" If you want, you can give them both the same last name and then the search will work better Go to the person with the two part last name. On the Edit screen click on the Names tab in the middle of the screen. There you will see a field for Last Name and for Sort Name Type: Berney Ficklin in the Last name field and also in the Sort name field. Then when you search for this person, type a ? instead of the - So search for Alexander Berney?Ficklin Then it will find both of them The ? means it will match any character in the first or last name. I have a confusion of names! Alexander Tennent Mackintosh Berney Ficklin and Alexander Tennant Mackintosh Berney-Ficklin are definitely the same individual. But BK gets as confused as I am when I search for them. Is there a good way of searching so that both forms of final name are regarded as equivalent? What do people usually do about situations like this? (There's the rather different question of which spellings are actually 'correct' - does anyone have views on this please?) Thanks JOHN B
Dear All I think I have selected the wrong route - can anyone please advise me. I have one file F1 and have just received a new gedcom F2. (Each has some 5000 entries.) I know that 4-5 individuals are on both F1 and F2. I want to merge F1 and F2, avoiding duplicates. I decided to use the "Compare two databases (C2D)" utility. (Was this my MISTAKE NUMBER ONE???) I easily compared and dealt with the 4-5 individuals I knew were on both F1 and F2. But I also want to have all the other individuals on F2 copied onto F1. Doing this using the C2D facility is extremely long-winded. It seems to work generation by generation. I have found myself repeatedly having to press 4 buttons: "Copy Spouse", "Copy Event" (Marriage), Select "Children", "Copy all Children". (Is this my MISTAKE NUMBER TWO?) I have spent about 5 hours repeatedly pressing these 4 buttons. Surely there is a quicker way of doing this. And how do I know when I have copied all of F2 onto F1? Now just to make my day, the computer has crashed. Does this mean I have lost all the work I have done? Thanks for any advice you can give. Disconsolately yours (it's raining here in York!) JOHN BIBBY
My 'work around' is to use a non-breaking space using "alt 0160" (without the quotes and numbers on the number board). Thus your Berney Ficklin' [two words] tuns into Berney Ficklin' [one word]. As you can see there is no visual change but BK will then sort on Ber rather than Fic. Pauline What gedcom viewer are you using? Jim Hi John Some of the notes are attached to Events and some are on the Notes tab on Edit, & all are internal text files. All the Notes seem to be included in the gedcom OK, and are showing up when I'm viewing individuals in my gedcom viewer program, but in the viewer's General Information about the gedcom, with all the gedcoms I've created with BK, it shows them as having zero Notes. Gedcoms created by other programs, however, are shown in the General Information report as having notes (where there are any). I guess it's not a major issue as the Notes seem to be exporting into the Gedcom OK, but I just wondered why my gedcom viewer program is counting the notes in gedcoms created by other programs, but not in BK gedcoms, even when created from the same original data, and if this indicated something amiss somewhere. Many thanks Pauline On 24/06/2012 13:43, John Steed wrote: > To Pauline akpak@balmnet.co.uk > > When you say Notes do you mean the notes under the Notes tab on Edit > or do you mean something on the Source screen? > > Go to Edit to view the person and see exactly where the note is located. > > There are general notes on the Notes tab for either Individual or > Family > > There are also Event Notes attached to the Events grid on the N column. > > And there are notes you can type into a Source for an event. > > When you make a Gedcom file, if you have BK6.4 or 6.5, then turn on > the option there to pick which fields of the source to export. To John Bibby If only 4 or 5 people are duplicated, then you can import the gedcom into your main database and then fix those 4 or 5 people. To Pauline akpak@balmnet.co.uk When you say Notes do you mean the notes under the Notes tab on Edit or do you mean something on the Source screen? Go to Edit to view the person and see exactly where the note is located. There are general notes on the Notes tab for either Individual or Family There are also Event Notes attached to the Events grid on the N column. And there are notes you can type into a Source for an event. When you make a Gedcom file, if you have BK6.4 or 6.5, then turn on the option there to pick which fields of the source to export. You can turn off Abbreviation there since some programs will duplicate it when importing the gedcom file. John Concerning the PC crash it depends what type of crash (software or Hardware) as to whether you loss any data. Concerning the two files I would have import both into a test data base and then did a compare against my original looking for the duplicates. Another way would have been to run a alphabetic report on the test data base and resolve the dups there which is probably a lot faster than comparing data bases. After all way resolve it would become my new data base. I have three gedcoms I would like to compare against, one has 105,000 person in it, another has 150,000 people in it and the 3rd 500,000+ and my file only has 46,000, the problem with the compare it sequentially goes thorough the database on the right (the read only one) making for about 450,000 more compares than necessary. I can't offer an explanation about No.1 as I have never imported a GedCom into BK. I had the same problem with source information being duplicated when printing from a GedCom. This was, indeed, to do with the way I set up my sources originally. If you have (for example) "Parish Register" as the abbreviation and "Parish Register" in the actual text box and both are ticked then both will print. I overcame this by unchecking the abbreviation check box. This is used by BK when listing sources for you to choose from but there is no need for it to be printed. Just tick the "actual text" box and that will print. Thanks for the reply on the default folder build. I am trying to devise a workable file system for keeping pictures, census, and other downloaded files. In the past, I had not used the photo and media option in BK, but now that I am feeling more confident in want I am doing, I am attaching and using photos and downloaded census images. The programme installs itself in C:\Program Files\Brother's Keeper 6 but, as Otto says, you should change the location of the data file away from that folder. I keep everything I create under a master folder called C:\Data which I subdivide as required. There is a subfolder called C:\Data\Brother's Keeper 6 where I keep all my data in sub folders for the 4 different databases I manage -- mine and my wife's and 2 friends. The reason for having a master folder for everything I create is to make it easy to backup. I simply copy C:\Data to an external hard drive periodically, although I back up Brother's Keeper databases every day. ver 6.5.11 Just set up bk on a different computer. Was able to use the global search and replace utility to change the path for the text, picture, and media files. So far so good. My problem now is that I have many other folders under bk that need their paths changed also. I had kept death certificates, birth certificates, gravestone pics, census records, wills, etc, in their own folders. All folders are below the data files. Is there a way to search and replace all path names in bk, not just the txt, picture and media? Ginny
