    1. Re: [BK] Empty fields on Gedcom import
    2. Malcolm Webb
    3. Yes I did know that. I have set the fields to appear as birth, death and marriage and I picked the information up from this forum. As I say, I don't like blank fields so unless I have a source or can make a note about an event then I delete it. The most common one I delete is death until I find some evidence of death when I reinstate the field. All the best. 3. John- I too am in the same boat as John Stewart, in that I have many notes that are set at the default of null. When I was adding them, I either did not realize I needed to set print options, or was just sloppy in entering my data. However, now that I know the error of my ways, I too need to go back and reset all these note options. So, do I understand that you might be able to add a utility routine that will look for "is_null" in the print where box, so we can find notes entered, but not set to ever print. That would be a very nice option. I've Bk on 3 Computer (Windows 7, Vista and XP). On all PC's are the program files and data files in the same directory: C:\bk\ C:\bk\picture C:\bk\text C:\bk_media\ With this system it's very easy to copy the complete directory from Widows XP to Wndows 7 or Vista. You must not change the links. The backup of the data should be EXTERN. -- Greetings, Otmar Mayr

    3. Running in XP mode only changes how the program runs not where the data is stored. Another option, but I think is overkill, is to use Virtual PC where you are creating a PC within a PC. In other words you would be creating a virtual XP PC with its own virtual drives. Probably would create new problems unless you are a computer geek like me. 3. Mick, I have my BK on 4 different PCs 1) Main PC windows 7 64bit - installed on drive F: 2) Notebook running on XP and installed on C: 3) Old PC running windows ME (yes the 13 year PC is still chugging along) also on F: (use mainly for my BK backup) 4) On a home built PC run PCLinuxos on a simulated C: drive via the Wine emulator To get the files between the first three I have developed a batch file that copies them across my local network. Problem on PC 2 is the data, media & picture files might not work depending on how I have coded the path. There is a way the John has provided that the files are relative so that drive letter is not entered. Otherwise I can use the utility built into BK to fix the patches. 1. [BK] Maps!
    2. Rick Beitler
    3. Getting access to old, out-of-print maps on the internet has been a very frustrating experience for me. Every time I thought that I had found a map source, what I actually found was someone wanting to sell me something; a subscription to their website, reproduction maps (usually of marginal quality), or some other scheme to transfer my money from my pocket to the pocket of someone else. Even government websites do not make available maps of their boundaries from previous years. If they have a map link on their website, it is usually to Google Maps, which is not what the genealogist is looking for. Well, today I finally must have held my mouth just right, because I stumbled onto a wonderful, FREE, map archive. Ran by the University of South Florida, they have many many maps available to you the researcher, and all free. I have downloaded color pdf maps of 1892 Arkansas, 1892 Missouri, 1909 Oklahoma, 1891 Indiana (the 1892 colored map of Indiana is what I really wanted, as it showed counties in color. But the link it broken for those maps, I have sent an email reporting the broken links). And when I open them on my big monitor, I am able to blow them up several times to see even the smallest detail. These maps have been scanned at a very high level. So today, I used the 1909 Oklahoma to find Catale, which no longer exists, and also Whiteoak, which barely exists, to find where my wife's grandparents were living and married in 1906. I am so excited about this find. I have since found several communities referenced in Arkansas and Missouri where her family lived that no longer exist, but do on these maps. If you need an older map, go to this website and get as many as you need! http://etc.usf.edu/maps/galleries/us/index.htm Rick Beitler rabone@gmail.com http://chertyrock.blogspot.com Golf is a good walk spoiled. ~Mark Twain

    3. Rick, Thank you for sharing the link. It is so frustrating trying to pinpoint those places that don't exist now and maybe were never more than a "spot in the road" but were so very important to our ancestors. From Oklahoma Place Names, 2nd Edition, George H. Shirk, copyright 1965, 1974, University of Oklahoma Press, Norman, OK. Catale, Oklahoma is in Rogers County, 3 miles NE of Chelsea. It had a post office from October 6, 1894 to February 1933. Whiteoak, Oklahoma is in Craig County 7 miles west of Vinita. It had a post office from October 31, 1898 to October 31, 1957. I have several Oklahoma History oriented books like the above so feel free to email me if you think I might be able to help with a look up. lyn On 7/16/2012 4:06 PM, Rick Beitler wrote: > Getting access to old, out-of-print maps on the internet has been a > very frustrating experience for me. > > If you need an older map, go to this website and get as many as you need! > > http://etc.usf.edu/maps/galleries/us/index.htm > > > Rick Beitler > rabone@gmail.com > http://chertyrock.blogspot.com > > Golf is a good walk spoiled. ~Mark Twain > > Remember - Use the Archives at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/search > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to BK-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Perhaps I am missing something here but why would you want to import a blank field? I delete blank fields as I enter people in my database and then add a new field if I subsequently discover some previously unknown information such as a baptism date. 3. When I go to the genealogical society or to the archive center, I often print a few family sheets of the subjects I want to add information to, avoiding the risk of making mistakes jotting down BK numbers and info I'm looking for on a piece of paper. When I do find new information, there is plenty of room on the family sheet to write down this new data. Back at home, the family sheet provides me with the BK number of the individual along with the new information. I find it easier to work this way (and I recycle used paper!). It also provides a neater look to family sheets that I might give to certain persons, it shows the same presentation for all individuals on this sheet, whether there is information or not. 2. John Stewart
    3. Hello, John. I'm a long-time registered owner using BK6.5.11 and have a question regarding the printing of notes for individuals on the Edit screen (Edit>Notes>Print Where). When I first began using these many years ago I wasn't that knowledgeable about the subject. Now I would like to make some changes, but since I have nearly 190k individuals it would be a formidable task to weed through each and every one to make the "print to where" changes. At first I knew that leaving the selection blank in "print where" the note would be printed on all reports, but the selections of "only if ask for 1", "only if ask for 2", "only if ask for 3", were unclear to me then. Also, with the option to "Never Print" I may sometimes have been over zealous and mis-used the option and now it may no longer be what I would like to have happen. I guess my main question is: Would it be possible to add a feature to BK6 Utilities that would enable one to change the print instructions to a different selection? For example, to just change all "Never Prints" to the first option (print everywhere) with one single action, or the change "Only if ask for 1" to "print everywhere," etc. Thanks for all you do, John.
