3. Thanks to all for the feedback on tombstone photos. Bobby Richardson -----Original Message----- From: Diane Scannell [mailto:dscannell@satx.rr.com] Sent: Wednesday, August 22, 2012 2:39 PM To: bk@rootsweb.com Cc: Bobby Richardson Subject: Re: [BK] Photos of tombstones/monuments/grave markers I save all of my photos in the Picture directory using the number assigned by BK. For example, I am #260 in my file so my photos are saved as 260a.jpg, 260b.jpg and so on. The only difference in headstone photos is the addition of "hs" behind the number; i.e. 1064hs.jpg In older generations where photos of people are not available, the headstone is a nice substitute, and yes, I print them on all reports. For those that >are added afterwards, also the label has to be added. I did forget to mention that every pictures in the Picture-folder starts with the BK_number and the nameetc, e.g. 000012_Otto_12-years.jpg -- Otto Jrgensen http://www.bkwin.info/ All email is checked by NORTON Bobby, Otto and list: I do not store tomestone pictures within BK, but they are close by. Because many of my ancestors settled in one area of south central Pennsylvania, and no one in my direct lines left the area before me, I have many relatives in the local graveyards. Years ago, I started photographing entire cemeteries, include the church, a lot of landscape shots, road signs, even the outhouses (original toilets). I now have over 50,000 cemetery photos and they are stored separately from BK. I created a “Genealogy” folder in my root directory. In that folder I have sub-folders for BK6, another genie program, Cemeteries, Maps, Census, Obituaries, and a bunch of other stuff. Everything, EVERYTHING that I have concerning genealogy is in that folder. While I back up BK at least daily, I COPY the entire folder to a 16 gig thumb drive regularly. The cemetery sub-folder is right below the BK6 folder. Within the Cemetery folder are folders for each county I have taken pictures in. In those folders are individual folders for each cemetery, containing the photos of that particular cemetery. Each cemetery folder is given a name that consists of the initials of the cemetery; i.e. Buck Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery is B V L. When I shoot a cemetery, I start at the corner nearest the front gate, shooting every stone. I work my way back, walking every row, with a “new row” shot taken as I begin the next row. If there is a family group of stones (common in these old graveyards) then I take pix of the group. I often shoot duplicates to get the shot just right. My photo managing software lets me batch rename the entire shoot. Since the pictures were taken in location order, I rename them all in that order, using the same initials of the cemetery, a dash and 4 numbers. I.e. the pix of Buck Valley Lutheran Church Cemetery are named B V L-0001 through B V L-0750. The photo managing software has a built in database where I add the inscriptions from the stone. It only takes a few clicks to add the appropriate tomestone picture to the person in BK. This way, BK is not cluttered with pix of non-relatives, landscape shots and outhouses (I love outhouses), and these pictures are all stored together, so whenever I want to take a “walk” through a cemetery, I can do so electronically. Cemetery photography has become as big of a hobby for me as genealogy is, so I have put some effort into organizing the pix. Having everything in one “Genealogy” folder has made backups and restorations a breeze, particularly in the event of a total hard-drive crash or just moving to a new computer. One copy command, one paste command, reinstall the genie programs on top of the copy and it is done! 3. I started this long ago for a naming convention: LASTNAME_FirstMiddleNickMaiden~AbbrevSource~yyyy-mm-dd~Other.jpg Examples: SMITH_JohnPaul~WichitaEagle~2012-08-22~OnLine.jpg SMITH_SallyJaneJones~HometownCem~2012-08-22~Tombstone.jpg SMITH_FamilyGroup~Photo~1915Circa~MarionKS.jpg SMITH_Roger~WilsonCoHist~1905~Pg33.pdf JONES_BettySmith~~2012-08-22~.pdf BROWN_Felix~JohnsonFH~2012-08-22~ReqLetter.doc I keep all obits in an OBITS folder, Tombstones in CEMETERY - etc and those under family names within a top GENEALOGY folder. For obits the date is the date of publication, for books the copyright date, for others it might just be the date of entry, whatever. However the nice thing then is you can do a standard Windows search on the top GENEALOGY folder group and find all the SMITHs even if it is a maiden name without going into each folder even across family lines. Also using the ~ and keeping that structure (3 per filename) even if you don't "fill in all the blanks", is great because I can import the list of file name into Excel (I do using the freebie ASAP utilities for Excel) and I have a quick index of everything and I can then do a "text to columns" using the ~ as a delimiter and I can do further groupings. Not using any spaces in my file names helps eliminate headaches if I need to use the file name as a hyperlink. I use this for all my research on Wilson County Kansas as well and when I get a request from someone it is EXTREMELY easy to pull out everything I have on the HASS family across all cemeteries, obituaries, newspaper articles, marriage certificates, GAR registers, etc. Just my thoughts, Gene Ewert Neodesha, KS

    3. I sit here today thinking back to our beginnings . . . I am now 86 years old . . . forgive me for injecting these thoughts into your software concerns. My mind was reverting to the early days of our favorite software, Brother's Keeper. I established this "BK" list quite a while ago and I checked back into the "BK Archives" and found this message: From: Tim Pierce < twp@rootsweb.com> Subject: Brother's Keeper list moving to RootsWeb Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:14:07 -0500 "Hi, folks -- Dick Rose has been the manager of a longstanding very active Brother's Keeper list at emcee.com. Dick has told us that he wants to move his list to RootsWeb, so we're going to merge the subscribers of his list with this one. This is just to warn you that there may be a lot of traffic on this list before long. :-) You might also notice that at Dick's request, we've changed the name of the list from BK5 to just BK. That way, the list won't automatically be obsolete after the next Brother's Keeper release. :-) If you've forgotten why you're on this list or want to unsubscribe, send mail to BK-L-request@rootsweb.com with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body. Happy hunting! -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative system obfuscator and hack-of-all-trades" Looking back there were 118 messages in the first month of operation on Rootsweb, February, 1999. We still have 498 subscribers to the list. It has dropped some, but not too much. I would be eager to know if there are any of you who have remained faithful all these many years. All pictures are normaly located to the folder "my pictures" on the computer and I have an automatically savinsystem on that part For photo or other document used for BK a copy of the original are put to the folder Picture, Media, Txt related to the person they are connected to. Then theyy becom a part of the book from BK in RTF/doc form. As BK only automatiically only take one personal picture or a grup/family picture, more pictures are added after book report is finnish. As i also add picturetext in BK, they are presentes as normal labels to alll pictures giving informnation of the pictures. For those that are added afterwards, also the label has to be added. -- Otto Jørgensen http://www.bkwin.info/ All email is checked by NORTON

    3. Bobby, I use the convention of naming each photo, beginning with the word "tombstone" and then the name(s) of the people named on the tombstone. I use this because my base genealogy photo file (not in BK) has all the photos of tombstones and people together. I attach the tombstone photo in the space provided under burial information, which does not print out on any report I use. I don't find it appropriate to print tombstone photos in my reports, which is a personal bias, I know.
