    3. What I want is to have the descent of the furthest ancestor on my father's side with the furthest ancestor on my mother's side in one file including all related persons. In other words, I want my ascendance with all the brothers and sisters of my ancestors with their own children. This way, I could exclude all persons in my database that are not really linked to me. Would it be easier to extract the data to a new subfolder rather than going through a gedcom file? Gilles

    3. Yes, and if you choose "ancestors of a person plus family of each ancestor" you'll get all your cousins, aunts & Aunts plus all the way up the line. OR is you're just looking for your cousins & aunts & uncles & ancestors but not their families choose "ancestors of a person" starting with yourself, then "descendants of a person" starting with your grandfather. Try one out and see if that's what you are looking for. Your own family might be doubled but you can delete those. 3. Hello John and list,   I am using BK not only to track my ancestors, but also to maintain the data of all descendants of a 5x great-grandfather of mine. We regularly meet in family reunions and keep track of all the news of the descendants' families. This also brings a lot of modern forms of partnerships, that I do not know how to add to my BK data.   How do you treat same-sex relationships of couples living together? In some countries/states it is possible to register these relationships (similar to a marriage). How do you add (adopted) children of such same-sex couples? Is there any way to enter this in BK? So far the program requires that partners must have opposite sex, I think.   Looking forward to your feedback.   Thank you. Bert from Germany         .

    3. Hi John and List As more of a lurker on the list than a poster, I just wanted to take the opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU JOHN, your support and continued work on BK is way above excellent. BK was the first and only program I tried upon acquiring my first home computer and it wasn't long before I registered with the DOS version back in 1995, upgrading to the various Windows versions as they became available. After my initial introduction to version 6 which was a total disaster from my point of view (my old brain was the problem not John's program), I have happily been using the latest versions for quite sometime now with none of my initial hiccups and over the years have felt absolutely no need to look at any other programs. As the unexpected owner of an iPad I was interested in earlier discussions on the apps available. These were "paid" versions and with my Scottish ancestry I wanted something "free" that would enable me to view all data while out and about researching. As a touch typist an iPad is not ideal so it is not my intention to use an app for updating and good old handwritten notes will still be the order of the day. Last week I came across the recently released free "Heredis" app. On the surface it appears to provide the viewing and searching options I was looking for, but as yet I have not had the chance to upload my gedcom. Has anyone else used this app in a similar way to that which I intend and how did you find it. John I hope you will not be upset for my reintroducing this iPad topic, you are still absolute tops in my book. Thank you again for all your hard work. Kind regards Glennis

    3. Just to let everybody know I am a very happy user of BK since 1992 and continue to look at other programs that my genealogy friends are using and one friend has a data base of 618,058 individuals in it and is being held hostage in an old version of FTM. Well I tried to load it in FTM 2012 and after 72 hours (3 days) it bombed out, so then I opened it in FTM2006 and created a GEDCOM and imported it into a new database on BK6, took a couple of hours to import and opens quickly after the import. On FTM it takes 10 to 15 minutes to open before you can start using it. So BK can handle much larger databases than FTM. Thanks John for all your great public and private support. Jim I might as well get my two cents worth into this thread. I started using BK in 1990, after using a self-programmed dBase2 system for 8 years. What an amazing program, and what wonderful, personalized support over 22 years! Thanks, John, for putting up with my limits-pushing requests and suggestions (we currently have 479,931 individuals in our Family Database). -- Paul J. Lareau

    3. In 1984, I purchased my first computer from IBM. Once it was received, I had no idea what to do with it. About that time, or shortly thereafter, the TV program "Roots" was very popular. Now I knew what to do with my computer.....genealogy. A shareware program by Melvin O. Duke called Genealogy on Display (GOD) was obtained and I was off and running. Fast forward to 2010. The 5 1/4" floppies and the program had gone unused for over 25 years and now it was time to renew my interest in genealogy. Melvin O. Duke was nowhere to be found. Enter John Steed. Not only did he have a 5 1/4" disk reader, but he offered to convert my data to GEDCOM. All I had to do was send John the disks, which I did reluctantly. Shortly thereafter, John came through with his offer and I thought, why not give BK a try. With service like that, how could I go wrong? As they say, "The rest is history." Thanks John. [] (_You_ can probably tell _me_ when I joined!) As for BK itself: I've been a user since either 5 or 4 (someone else mentioned a database conversion; I _think_ I've been through two of them). Can't compete with the 5.25" floppy folk, but I think I did get it on a 3.5", from a shareware seller at a computer fair. Decided to pay not long after. I have a _lot_ of criticisms of BK, and am very grateful to JS for putting up with me all these years! I still like it's workmanlike attitude, not making concessions to fads ahead of the underlying purpose of the software, but the main best feature is the personal support, which I'm unaware any other such software offers: not only are problems answered very quickly, but also even suggestions are implemented _fairly_ rapidly (where possible). I do worry that the revenue stream must be fragile - how many new genealogists are taking up BK rather than one of the more flashy (and better publicised) competitors - and also what happens after JS, but JS has assured me that he's well and intends to keep at it for many years yet! The date is in yyyy mm dd form (I _think_ always, though that _could_ just be because I have them set that way anyway), which means the filenames come up in the order taken if alphasorted, even if you don't use the serialised number option. It's called PICS rather than PICTURE because I had it before that was the default (or at least before I knew that was the default; I don't know how long it has been). In BK, under File | Options | Text/Picture, I have "The following folder below the BK6 data files" selected with "PICS" in the box. I have other subfolders within PICS: 20 in all. Some are named with the (BK) number of someone I have lots of pics of; others are things like baptisms, births, burials, census-i.nfo, deaths, director.ies, manifest.s, marriage.s, passport, and probate, and contain images of documents; census-i.nfo is subdivided into 1841Engl.and, 1841-Wales, and so on, with files in there whose name is the BK number of the head of household, such as 34.jpg. (This is not a good idea because it fights BK's backup scheme, which doesn't like it if you have two picture files with the same name in different directories; where I'm doing genealogy for other people, I just put all those files in the same folder with a serial number, starting with "000 1960Q2 b of John Smith", and using m of, d of, or no "of" [and no Q] if it's a census entry, e. g. "030 1911 John Smith". I find this works well; YMMW. The serial number is for the order I find them in.) Within my "stones" directory, the individual pictures are named with the BK number, or if a couple both of them, such as 73.jpg or 217&216.jpg; anyone actually on the stone is linked to the picture within BK, much as anyone on the census returns are linked to the picture of that. If I have no picture of a person (but have one of a suitable stone), I usually (I think) make that the default picture for that person; that's just my choice. > >I would like to see bk have an option of printing the picture from the >source so I wouldn't have to add it a second time or to automatically >put it in the pictures if a picture is added to a source. Must have been a long time back because my Registration number is 4100 which would indicate its been around for a while. Must say, I have always gotten an answer from John, whether by Email or a phone call, and its always been right on the mark to solve the problem of the day. Many other programs have come and gone but Brothers Keeper still gets improved and even more useful. Thanks John. Dave Bradshaw

    3. Hi Dick and all other listers, A quick check of the Rootsweb archive shows my first post to this list seems to be March of 1999, but I was a happy user of the program for sometime before then. I think I started using Brothers keeper about 1995 or 96. It is amazing how quickly time has flown, it certainly does not feel like 13 years since I joined this list along with many other helpful lists on Rootsweb for my research. It has been an interesting journey in that time. It would be interesting to know how many have been subscribers since the early days? I am now 86 years old . . . forgive me for injecting these thoughts into your software concerns. My mind was reverting to the early days of our favorite software, Brother's Keeper. I established this "BK" list quite a while ago and I checked back into the "BK Archives" and found this message: From: Tim Pierce < twp@rootsweb.com> Subject: Brother's Keeper list moving to RootsWeb Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:14:07 -0500 "Hi, folks -- Dick Rose has been the manager of a longstanding very active Brother's Keeper list at emcee.com. Dick has told us that he wants to move his list to RootsWeb, so we're going to merge the subscribers of his list with this one. This is just to warn you that there may be a lot of traffic on this list before long. :-) You might also notice that at Dick's request, we've changed the name of the list from BK5 to just BK. That way, the list won't automatically be obsolete after the next Brother's Keeper release. :-) If you've forgotten why you're on this list or want to unsubscribe, send mail to BK-L-request@rootsweb.com with the word "unsubscribe" in the message body. Happy hunting! -- Regards, Tim Pierce RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative system obfuscator and hack-of-all-trades" Looking back there were 118 messages in the first month of operation on Rootsweb, February, 1999. We still have 498 subscribers to the list. It has dropped some, but not too much. I would be eager to know if there are any of you who have remained faithful all these many years.
