    3. To Fran LaChance I do not have a way to globally delete an event. You can find everyone with that event with Lists, Word Search, Search Event tab, then pick that event name and in the Description field click there and then press F3 for <not empty> and then do the search John Steed ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fran LaChance" <singer.35@hotmail.com> To: "BK-L" <BK-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 09, 2012 1:07 PM Subject: [BK] deleting events > BK 6.5.17 registered user. > > Before John added 'Flags", which I now utilize, I had used Ancestor > interest & Descendant > interest. 3. Hi John, Would it be possible to get the program to sort names by first and second name when doing an F3 search? I have, for example, a bunch of William Browns and when I do an F3 ? Brown they are sorted by first name only. Thanks, Pat

    3. To Pat Brown Currently it will not sort by middle name. However, there is an option to sort them by birth year if that helps. If you have BK 6.5 pick Options on the select person screen. Or if you have a version before 6.5 go to the main screen and pick File, Options, Edit Screen, and turn on the option to have the select person list show people in birth year order. 3. The situation is quite common from census records I have examined. The rule of thumb I use but not 100 percent accurate is that if the grandchild has the same surname as the grandparents then I set the parent as male. If different surname then I set parent as female. When more facts become available then a correction can be made David Sandham

    3. Being able to add a child to an unknown parent would be useful.  In census records I often find children living with grandparents, but dont know who their parent is.  They could be children of a married son, or more likely children of unmarried daughter or daughters. I tend to list them in the grandparents notes until I am able to identify the parent,  but the idea of attaching them to an unknown parent is a good idea.   Sue Horsman

    3. To Carole Caruso The program allows a child with unknown sex, but it does not allow a parent with unknown sex. So you have to pick Male or Female for a person before you can add a child to that person. It has to do with the program wanting a Mother and Father of each child. The marriage record for the parents only has those two choices currently. Rather than have me change the file structure, perhaps you can just call the parent either male or female and then add the child. I realize what you want to do, and if the situation was more common, perhaps I could change the program. However, I think is is rare when you have a grandchild name and the grand parents names and you do not know the sex of the parent. Since it is rare, you can pick male or female and put in a Note that you do not know the name or the sex of that person. Most of the printed reports like Tree charts and Box charts do not say Male or Female to the chart will look the same if the parent is male or female. So people will not be confused by most of the printouts. Your Note will explain the situation if you print a Group sheet with notes. 3. Thanks for the suggestions as to how to handle a child who obviously is a grandchild but the parent is not known, which means the sex of the parent is not known. What I really want to do is have the child appear on a line chart linked as the child of the grandparents through a parent named Unknown with sex listed as Unknown. I am puzzled as to why I can't do this because we can add a child listed as Unknown with sex Unknown and he/she will appear on the line chart. How come I can't add a child to Unknown without declaring the sex? John, can you make a tweak to the program - or did you in the new version? - to make this happen? Thanks. Carole

    3. I have handled the problem as follows: Suppose that John Smith (age 7) is shown as the grandson of Samuel Smith (age 57) with Samuel listed as head of household. I enter John as the son of Samuel but instead of calling him just "John Smith" I call him "John (gson) Smith" At a glance it shows that John is not truly the son of Samuel but that there is a close connection. By using (gson) as sort of a middle name, this John Smith will pop up whenever I do a name search -- perhaps at some later time. If I ever find the parents of John I can easily drop the link to Samuel, add the appropriate parent and correct all links. The problem with using something like "adopted", or even "foster", is that, in fact, you have no knowledge that these titles are correct. Any reports involving John show the correct relationship since reports print out the name. 3. might not be correct but what I do is add an "unknown" child to the grandparents with a female gender, then link the child to unknown with a note stating I don't really know to which child of the grandparents the child belongs, nor the gender of the parent and probably never will. If, in the census the child is listed as g'child, then I add that source to the entry.
