    3. I backup my files on a 32gb USB stick every time I close down the programme, and once a week I backup my hard drive on a WD external hard drive via a "ClickFree Transformer" which does an incremental backup of changed or new Giles. All the best. 1. [BK] Re: Family (or Couple) events (or pictures/media)
    2. J. P. Gilliver (John)
    3. In message <20190303030542.14001.41254@mmlive.rootsweb.com>, searnhardt8@hotmail.com writes: >I do, but only recently. It has become one of my favorite features. >When you do something with "Family" it puts in a corresponding entry >for the spouse so you only have to enter the information once and both >are covered. Just be sure the information actually applies to both, >but if it does, you should be good to go! >SE [] (And thanks Bill for mentioning that Event, as well as Resided and Census, has a family option too; I hadn't noticed that.) Pictures and Media can also have a family setting, and this has the same effect. And Notes. (Sadly not - yet? - to-do items.) The use of the word "Family" may be the source of some of your (Bill's) confusion: a better (IMO) description is "Couple". After I requested it, JS added an option (I forget where) for BK to use the word Couple instead of Family in (I think!) all these places. [The example I give is a picture of a child with his parents: to me, that's a "Family" picture, but if I denote it as such under the child, it also appears under his [subsequent] wife, where it isn't relevant; calling it a "Couple" picture makes things clearer. IMO.] I would add to searnhardt8's exhortation "Just be sure the information actually applies to both": ensure you have the _right_ couple selected - by which I mean the right spouse. If a person has more than one spouse, and you have a Family/Couple event (e. g. resided, census) that relates to a second or subsequent spouse (such as where he lived with his second wife), make sure the second spouse is showing when you add the event. This is particularly relevant if you switch away from the person and then back: as it stands at present, switching away from a person and then back, in BK, will always come back with the _first_ spouse, even if you had the second selected before you switched. So it's very easy to add events/pictures to (partly) the wrong couple. [JS said a while back that he'd look into fixing this, but it has gone quiet; I presume it's difficult to fix, and/or would give backward-compatibility problems with the back/forward people buffer.] If you _do_ make such a mistake, you don't have to delete and re-enter the event/picture (which is tedious if, for example, you have lengthy notes and/or complex sources for it): just make sure you have the common individual at the head, change the event/picture to the individual form, select the other spouse, and change the event/picture back to Family/Couple. You can even do this if it isn't a family/couple event, but relates to one of multiple spouses - say you'd added where she lived, but had added it to the wrong wife: you change it to family/couple, select the common partner, change it to individual, select the other spouse, change it to family/couple, switch to that spouse, and change it back to individual. That sounds more complicated than it is, and can save a lot of typing! (Say you'd included a lengthy note of why you know she lived there for a Resided, or included a long list of who's who for a group picture.) Hope that helps some people. -- J. P. Gilliver. 3. Census is a tag that tells a situation av a certain date. It is not for us a spesific event but a part of the sours to tell situation. We use cesus a documentation, ut by it is noe av event for a person. As the census are not byus, each year it is status for a persin, eg. at 1865, 1875, 1891, 2000, 2010 etc --- hilsen/regards Otto -#- Den 03.03.2019 03:06, skrev Bill Webster: > For Event/Fact, you can record Census (Family), Resided (Family), Event > (Family). 2. I do, but only recently. It has become one of my favorite features. When you do something with "Family" it puts in a corresponding entry for the spouse so you only have to enter the information once and both are covered. Just be sure the information actually applies to both, but if it does, you should be good to go! SE

    3. To J. P. Gilliver The "Locations with Events" report does not show the ToDo items that have locations. (Those are not events) Also, when you run "Locations with Events" be sure to check the option for "Show all events" otherwise it will not show Immigrated and Emigrated. To find your odd location, try Lists, ToDo Search Report, and search the location there. 2. Bob Dunlop
    3. Hi John, Sorry for the confusion. I meant that I had a location show up and I know that I didn't enter it in the locations on the edit page. In my case, the location was a reference to a Provincial Archive. When I tried the Lists "Locations with Events" it was reported. When I went into the record, I still could not see the "location". I tried the "delete unused locations" - none were reported. When I used the "global change location" the program indicated that the changes were made. After several frustrating days, I looked in the To Do tab for the records that were reported. That is where I found the errant location. When I changed the Location in the To Do tab to the City where the Archive was located, then used the Delete unused locations, the offending entry was deleted. In my version 7.3.4 dated 11-Dec-18, the ToDo tab shows Date; Status; Description; Location; Repository; Type & Priority fields. I did not know until now, that the F8 feature would work in the Location field on the To Do tab. In my case, I would have realized that the To Do location was the same as the Edit/Fact location and perhaps it would have made me enter the city on the initial entry. I have not noticed the other issue with the Immigrated/Emigrated events. However, this morning I tried the report using a known location of a person in my database who had Emigrated and one who had Immigrated. Neither were reported using the Location with Events list. So perhaps that is something that John Steed could address. Hope this helps, Bob On Sat, Mar 2, 2019 at 5:40 AM J. P. 3. Hi John, I had that issue once and I think that it came from the location in the To Do list. I am not 100% sure of that but it does ring a bell. Perhaps John Steed can better answer that question? I guess that the Location file stores it for simplicity. I just did a test and the F8 function works in that area as well. However, it should also find it I would think by using the current utilities. Bob On Fri, Mar 1, 2019 at 6:19 PM J. P. 2. J. P. Gilliver (John)
    3. I entered "new y" into a location box, and pressed F8: I got New York New York, New York, USA fair enough; I'd obviously entered the short form by mistake at some point. I now do a list of locations with events, specifying "Include only locations containing" "new y" to see if I can find the short one to correct it. (Not necessarily to the one in NY, USA; there's at least one other New York I know of, a small village in Northumberland!) I get a list of events in: Brooklyn, New York, USA Floral Park, New York, USA Fulton, Oswego, New York, USA Jamaica, Queens County, New York, USA New York, New York, USA Rochester, New York, USA I _don't_ get any just in "New York". I also noticed the list shows no "Immigrated" - which in my case is going to be the majority of the events in NYNYUSA. I try "delete unused locations" - none are reported. I do a "global change location": I use F8 to select the "New York" (on its own) one, and change it to "New York, zz". It says Done. I do the "locations with events", and specify "zz". I get an empty page (apart from the date and "Page 1" headers). So: 1. Why can't I find the just "New York" event? It's obviously in use, as "delete unused locations" threw nothing out. 2. Why doesn't "locations with events" list Immigrated and Emigrated events? (Probably Emigrated too.) [Yes, I can see 1 & 2 are connected.] -- J. P. Gilliver. 3. To Frances LaChance What do you mean by "no marriage dates between 1850 - 1900." If there is no marriage date, then the blank date can not be between two years. Do you mean you want people that do have a marriage date, but the married date is not during those years? Or do you mean people with a blank marriage date, but those people were Born between those years? You can do some of what you want. You can go to Lists, Word Search. You can get a list of everyone named Smith. Or you can click the Marriage tab at the top, and for the Husband name type Smith John Steed ________________________________ From: Otto Joergensen <otjoerge@online.no> Sent: Friday, March 1, 2019 10:46 PM To: bk@rootsweb.com Cc: Frances LaChance Subject: [BK] Re: Is there a way? 3. Hello Roy. I have found that main failing with SD cards is the quality of the Connector in the device.; PC, Laptop, etc. Some card readers are made poorly. If a connector fails, the card cannot be read. Static Electricity (Zap makes scrap) could be an issue in some environments. Then also, a quality brand ( if there is such a thing for SD Cards) is a better bet than those purchased cheaply from a large Asian country. I insist on a single 'active' database. How else can one maintain such on multiple devices and with low faith in reliability of said devices.? It is difficult for me when I am in travelling mode. What you do should work for you a treat, but I am not so focussed or diligent. And I can use my "sneaker-net" to carry the SD card with me from laptop to desktop as desired. My question is with regard to the durability of the SD card(s). I've heard that there are limited read/write cycles when using an SD card. It's an A-Data branded 32 GB micro SD xc with full size adapter, class-10, U-1. I'm making frequent backups of the micro SD. Some of the warnings about read/write cycles are related to using SD cards in continuous looping cameras and such. I'm not doing that. I'm basically using it like a mini "hard drive." Bad choice? or okay? I'm open to suggestions. Regards to all, Roy Marriott

    3. To Gilles Paquette If Preview gives a blank screen, have the user click Print instead. Does it print correctly to paper? Sometimes Preview has problems with certain printer drivers. Also have the user pick File, Printer Setup, and check the paper size to be sure it is letter size or something similar. John Steed ________________________________ From: J. P.
