1. [BK] Siblings, step-siblings, half-siblings.
2. Jim Ramaley
3. I touched on this topic in a post in March 2017 but I keep running into real life situations that beg for a solution. The question: Is there an easy way to show all siblings from an input screen (i.e., not as a report)? Just as a person can be a child in more than 2 families, many people have siblings other than full or even half -- that is, they are in families in which no natural parent is present. The standard definitions are: 1. Siblings share both parents, 2. half-sibs share one parent, 3. step sibs share no parents although some people do not distinguish between half sibs and step-sibs. Real example from today's email: Family group 1 consists of parents George & Judy and children George Jr. and Michael. George & Judy divorce with George marrying Karen, creating Family Group 2, and Judy marring Tom, creating family group 3. George Jr. is now in three family groups but BK does not allow this and so the arrangement must be discussed in the notes, To add a fairly typical condition, suppose Karen had a child, Katti, from a previous marriage to Alan and that George & Karen become the parents of a child Tim. When the dust settles we have: George Jr is: (1) the natural child of George & Judy (2) the step-child of Karen (who married George) (3) the step-child of Tom (who married Judy) (4) the half-sib of Tim (who is a child of George & Karen) (5) the step-sib of Katti (who is the dau of Karen & Alan) (6) the full-sib of Michael. In normal parlance, and in obituaries, the technical distinctions are often omitted: George Jr is often shown simply to have sibs Michael, Tim & Kattie. The question is, can this be displayed on the screen when one is looking at a family group? The answer is yes but it requires programming and the "two-family" limit would have to be eliminated . One needs to look at all families in which one of the principles (child, father, or mother) is present. But there are complexities and consideration would have to be given as to exactly who the user is looking at; that is, are you looking at George Jr's family group (three groups! in which case you have sibs, half-sibs, and step-sibs), or George Sr (two groups in which you have natural children & step children), etc. One might argue that the issue could be resolved by declaring that a step-parent is only the one who marries the custodial parent, but in the era of joint custody even this idea fails. Especially if the natural parent marries a second time after the death of the first step-parent. Again, these are real situations. But I do wish for a solution.

1. [BK] GEDCOM embedded nicknames SOLVED
2. Jim Dell
3. BK 7 users Back in February I had a problem when comparing my database to my friends who uses a different genealogy program. He had embedded the person's nick name within the person's birth name. This creates a problem in the BK compare routine when you compare "John Doe" to "John 'Jack' Doe" Obviously, they are not equal when doing a binary compare. A German software developer named Diedrich Hesmer contacted me about his program GPS-Start. The program is like a "Swiss Army Knife" of GEDCOMs. It was able to read my friend's GEDCOM and remove the embedded nickname and create a new GEDCOM with a new file name. If you have any problems reading or processing other people's GEDCOMs you might want to check it out https://ofb.hesmer.name/gedserpro_e.html Jim

3. Jeff I had the same problem the first time. Funny the same GEDCOM worked for Ancestry.com The 2nd & 3rd times it worked because I ran a macro and removed invalid dates. When the full date isn't known, I use something like ?/?/2018 The other thing that might cause it is if you have hyper links in your file. 1. [BK] Re: Difference between Find-A-Grave and BillionGraves
2. I cannot refute what they say since I rarely if ever use them, but if they require a photo and GPS coordinates, that is very good proof, but still limiting for genealogy. I've used Findagrave (and contributed many memorials) so I know that sometimes the family knows where the person is buried, but they are in an unmarked grave. If I know where their grave is, I'll take a photo of the unmarked grave. If I find their burial place in an obit or on a death record, but there is no stone in the cemetery for them, does this mean that person will never be on BillionGraves? I can put them on Findagrave and explain where I found the "proof" information. No gravestone or GPS required. So for me, I guess Findagrave is more flexible. Sometimes a bit too flexible.... Some people do make wild guesses as to grave location, or even add their ancestors merely to have a memorial to link all the kids to, and will say "burial unknown", which is totally usless for a site called FIND A GRAVE. They've turned it into a genealogical site without the required proof. Benefits and drawbacks of each approach. 3. Isn't this just a bit of marketeer-speak, that tries to deflect from the real issue by focussing on something else that is largely spurious? It's even less convincing than the comparison table put out by The Genealogist in an attempt to show how their website is better than Ancestry and Find My Past. In both cases, they concentrate on what they do with the data they hold, when the real issue is the quantity and scope of the data itself. 180 million Find a Grave records versus 30 million on Billion Graves (so they've only got another 970 million to go - another bit of marketeer-speak!) tells you pretty much all you need to know about which is the better. Or it would if Find a Grave told us how many of their Memorials had photos of the gravestones. >---------------------------------------------------------------------- > >Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2019 14:14:01 +1000 >From: Steve Boyd <boydsd@tpg.com.au> >Subject: [BK] Difference between Find-A-Grave and BillionGraves >To: bk@rootsweb.com >Message-ID: <38372f97-cebd-6cf8-5387-8329ccbbcd06@tpg.com.au> >Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8; format=flowed > >G'day all > >I just found this article (by BillionGraves, part 1 of 2) outlining the >differences between the two cemetary mapping sites. > >https://blog.billiongraves.com/2019/04/17/what-is-the-difference-between-billiongraves-and-find-a-grave-part-i-researching/ > >I would be interested to hear if anyone has experiences which refute the >BillionGraves claims. >I find that there are more graves in Australia listed in BillionGraves >than in Find-A-Grave. > >Steve Boyd >Melton, Victoria >Australia > >

Then click on the Address tab in the middle of the screen. The address lines have a line for Couple Name and/or Individual Name. If the Individual Name is blank, but if there used to be something on that line, then you either need to put something back in the Individual Name line, or else from the top menu click Delete, Individual Address. I find that there are more graves in Australia listed in BillionGraves than in Find-A-Grave. Steve Boyd Melton, Victoria Australia

3. I just found a monumental inscription for Mary Neve, and was looking to see if she was one of mine. Since that surname is spelt at least as Neve, Neave, and Neeve, I entered mary ne* into the search box. I have "Also search husband's last name" ticked (I usually do leave it ticked). I got some hits, but was surprised not to see any of the names with a "+" before them, denoting a married-name hit. (There was one with a "*", indicating an alternative name.) So I changed it to mary neave , and got a lot more hits, many with the "+"s. So just be aware - if you're looking for married names, don't use wildcards. (BK 7.3.5, "14-Jan-19".) -- J. P. Gilliver. 3. Hi John Steed and all, The fault that was there last night has vanished. No problems connecting with the site, pressing the FindaGrave button with or without reference number or on HTML using the FindaGrave link. Works with both the IE11 and Google Chrome browsers and also works with the fix John Steed sent me so it's all good. Thanks you other people for sharing that it works with you folk. Can use it again dependably. Good work! It seems that the FindaGrave website is now a secure one with a slightly different web address. If you want to chase down grave memorials then may I suggest this URL: https://nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.findag rave.com%2F&data=02%7C01%7C%7C0ba039d400b04defbf8708d6c0913f94%7C84df9e7 fe9f640afb435aaaaaaaaaaaa%7C1%7C0%7C636908127395407064&sdata=W9L0PbBa53s MCvmJel8n5rcTrbd6HWN36k2o5Q9VPMM%3D&reserved=0 Do you happen to know any more about this John Steed? Hoping the web arrangement in BK with FindaGrave will adjust to suit reasonably soon as it's kind of nifty to be able to link to the website from BK.
