    1. [BK] Reasonableness Check - Unidentifiables??
    2. Paul J. Lareau via
    3. I just ran the Reasonableness Check on my database for the first time in a couple of years (my bad!! :-[ ). This is the first time I have run it under BK 7.0 and under Windows 7, but I'm not sure this matters. Most of the errors found are identifiable and fixable, but I have found two kinds that I cannot figure out what happened or what I did to cause them. In both cases, I have found quite a few instances of each kind of error. PERSON NAME age -1 years b. 12 Nov 1885 d. 7 Oct 1885 Situation: The correct birthdate and deathdate seem to have gotten reversed each under the wrong label. It happens virtually always in an entry for an childhood death. The second type comes in three different flavors. The entry is usually flagged because the person appears to have been married before they were born, married after they had died, or have a minus age (died before they were born). In all cases where I have the source document available, of the three dates, two of them are the SAME (one of which is correct, the other is not), and if the third date is present, it is nowhere to be found on or nearby the source record at all! Any ideas? Paul J. Lareau

    2. John Steed via
    3. To Maureen Farrell Here is a way to do what you want. You need to make a gedcom with only part of the source information and then read it back into a new data folder. 1. Be sure you have a current Backup of the database. 2. Write down, or else remember the name of your BK database (the folder name that shows at the bottom of the main BK screen directly above the number of names and families. 3. Pick File, Gedcom, Export and you can either pick all people, or selected and pick descendants of the person the report is for. Pick a name for the gedcom file. Then it will ask what information to export to the gedcom file. On that screen near the top pick Sources, and below that pick "Only export certain fields of the sources" 4. Then click OK to make the gedcom file. It will pop up a screen asking which parts of the sources to export. Check only the Title and the Page options. 5. Then open a new database with File, Open Database, Create. 6. After you have created the new database, pick File, Gedcom, Import and import the gedcom file that you made. The sources will only have the Title and Page numbers. 7. Then print your report from that database. 8. When you are finished, you can pick File, Open database, and open your normal database again. As for the problem with "endnotes with no duplicates" it will repeat a source if ANY part of it is different, including the page number. 3. Hello all: I see now that I read Roy's message that what I guess is intuitive to others didn't register with me as to how label my backups. When I put my thumbdrive in it shows G, which I'm quite happy with. I was looking for it to ask me for a file name before it started to do the backup. I see now the box for folder which does the name and the backup. Sorry everyone sometimes it takes a kick in the rear to focus the eyes.. Dave

    1. [BK] simple report showing title of source and page
    2. Maureen Farrell via
    3. I am probably missing an option here, but is there a way to print a descendant report that shows simply the "source title" and page in footnotes, without actual text, comments etc.? Local historical society has a project collecting data on Irish families in the county. Although they do have in their files varying amounts of info submitted by individuals, they want to post only very basic data for families on their website. I would like to be able to produce something that is only 5-6 pages for 3 generations. Since my database is pretty heavily sourced, BK is currently producing 89 pages when I try to make an RTF file, most of that is "actual text" plus many duplicate footnotes. (even though I have checked "end notes with no duplicates") Thanks Maureen Farrell. (still running BK6.6.11)

    1. Re: [BK] Label Backup files
    2. Roy Marriott via
    3. Dave, From within BK we have the option to create a new folder for the back up files. I use this to date and label the type of backup by creating a new folder from the current date, such as: 20150130_full (or "_comp" for compressed) That is YYYYMMDD so that it sorts by date in Windows. You can also identify "pix" or "no-pix" either in the folder name or in a sub-folder. I like that we're no longer limited to the DOS naming convention of 8+3. 3. I'm using BK6 -- I create a new directory for the backup using the date as the name of the directory, such as 01302015. That way I can have several back ups on a thumb drive. Should I have a problem with the files, I have not overwritten good data. Not sure if this will take care of what you wish. 3. John Montgomery   I use the same nameing scheme with no problem.   You have to add the "name" and the (name) under the Names Tab.   I select Type of name "Called" for "name".   I select Type of name "Nickname" for (name).   Then when I use the "Find" function I check the box for "also search alternate names". The search gets slower as more names are added.Regards, Jerry Rolow On Thursday, January 29, 2015 8:41 AM, Jim Dell via <[email protected]> wrote: How does your naming scheme work if you have multiple pictures of the same person taken at different times in their life? 3. To John Montgomery You should have no problem searching for those names. The only problem is if you use [ ] around a name, because that is a code meaning it is the last name of the person. That was used BK5 and also works in 6 and 7 but it is not needed in 6 or 7 because of the Last Name field on the Names tab. But " " or ( ) should be fine. The only possible problem is if you have changed the Options in BK 5 to use ( ) for last name instead of [ ] for last name. Please tell me what problems you are having searching for those people. If you search for George Bloggs It should find both of those people. If it does not find both of those people, let me know. To find a person by middle name, either enter an Alternate name or else go to List, Word Search. There are two things to do Carefully EDIT the BKOPTION.DT5 file and find the PATH line and remove the drive letter from that line and add two spaces at the end of that line. That is because the CD drive or ZIP drive may be a different letter for the other user. So if it says E:\BK5 for the path on your computer change it to \BK5 and add two spaces at the end to make up for the removed E: That BKOPTON.DT5 files should be in the \BK5 directory on the ZIP or CD Then the user can make the CD or ZIP drive the default drive and start the program which is BK5W.EXE The other things that must be on the CD or ZIP disk are the .dll and vbx files that BK uses. 3. DFT is a handy utility to give others a graphical representation of family history without confusing the yet to be converted with mountains of data. There is virtually nothing the receivers of the information need to learn. If someone could write something similar, ideally avoiding the need for Java, it would be welcomed by those of us who mourn the loss of DFT. I used to employ DFT on my web sites until the Java security issues got in the way. Now I have some of my data at Tribalpages (whose lack of service is a worry to me at least) but viewing is not as simple for those new to family history. Java is a handy tool, but was/is open to exploitation by those intent on mischief and hence the continual stream of patches and rewrites. [] OK, only for those with Windows, but I have always understood BK's facility to be told that the data is read-only implies that JS doesn't mind - in fact encourages - you to issue a CD with BK on it. (At least BK6; I haven't got to the point where I know whether 7 has the facility to work from read-only data, but I'd be surprised if it doesn't.) Obviously you don't give away your licence code. (I've never actually created a CD, since those relatives who share my interest in genealogy usually [a] already have data of their own [b] are interested in a slightly different set of ancestors and descendants. But I've always thinking of doing so, maybe to try to get someone into the hobby.) -- J. P. Gilliver. 3. With Otto's help I was able to set up a flash drive to run BK5 , but it required the use of a machine running a 32 bit version of Windows, and administrative privileges, so couldn't be used on most public machines such as those in the local library.
