Jude, I might suggest naming your files "Crandall-Willard-obituary.txt", etc. Then if you look at your files with Explorer or some such program, the file for each person will be grouped together alphabetically by surname. Otherwise they'll be listed alphabetically by first name which could be a pain when you have a large database. Charlie Dobie. At 04:57 PM 5/29/2015, you wrote: >Thanks all for your input. Thanks all for your input. I have been using names, but will think about having there name and also adding the number. Looking through my text files I like the names as I do not remember the numbers. When I have more than one file on a person I will save as this: Willard Crandall Obituary or Willard Crandall biography. Dale, How long have you been the GenWeb coordinator for Plymouth County? Years ago, from about 1995-1998 or 99, I was the coordinator for Digby Co, NS, Canada. The first for that county. GenWeb was in its infancy back then, and there were many vacant seats for coordinators. I was also working as the US "lead" for the IIGS project, which took off after I moved on, apparently, but is not all that well-known, today. International Internet Genealogy Society had a lot to do with getting rootsweb more established, but we truly failed by not ensuring it remained absolutely free. Surely it is still free, but as it is now "owned" by Ancestry.com, it's not as free as we'd hoped for it to remain. Someone has to pay for the growing numbers of required servers, though, so perhaps we were just too short-sighted on the speed with which internet genealogical research was going to grow! :-) Good to see GenWeb is still surviving, as well! I use person's name, and follow that with a unique number. I used to use birth year, but that ran into a mess in one of my early databases, back when the main note size was very limited. I managed to find a one-up numbering system worked much better. It's rare that I have more than 20 individuals with the same name, but I might have 30 notes on those 20. John_Smith_1.txt is still a unique file, and if I am trying to match file to individual, I have to go through them to find which one has that note assigned to him, specifically. I also have a few that are multi-individual notes. For instance, John_Smith_2.txt might apply to three or four generations of those John Smiths, all in successive generations of the same line, or be added to 2-3 of that name in the same generations, usually in different lines. The one note might explain their relationship or lack thereof. Whenever possible, with these later versions, I try to keep my notes within the main note, rather than having an attachment. Still comes in handy in some situations, but it's not as necessary to be as regulated in usage as we once were. Jim, and other interested readers, In my database I have 89 men named William Elgie (so named from 1645 to 2012). Some have middle names; some have suffixes, but most of them are simply William Elgie. I use the BK number to identify text files, and photographs that pertain to each of the separate individuals. To BK users Because Dropbox caused problems with some extra files that BK uses, I moved a lot of the extra files to the TEMP folder a few months ago. Most of them were temp files such as those used when sorting an index, etc. In the process, the BKAUDIT.TXT file was also placed in TEMP However, I did some more testing and it looks like BKAUDIT.TXT will work correctly in the Dropbox folder, so in the next update I will change the program to put BKAUDIT.TXT in the data folder again, even if it is in Dropbox. Hi John, Windows Temp folder may not be a good idea as if people run things like Ccleaner at startup, then it will probable be deleted, unless they know it is there and make BKAUDIT.TXT an exception. Anything in Temp should really only be temporary and should not matter if it gets deleted. In fact the program that creates it should tidy up after itself on being closed. Or so I was taught. To Fran L Sometimes Dropbox does not like programs such as BK creating certain files in the dropbox folder. So just recently, I made a change to put the BKAUDIT.TXT file in a different Temp folder. With the current version, if your data is in DROPBOX then the BKAUDIT.TXT files will be in your Windows Temp folder which BK should be able to write to. I might make an option so you can pick where the BKAUDIT.TXT file goes. Did you use Windows to search for BKAUDIT.TXT and did you set Windows to search the entire C drive? It should find it. You should also have Backup copies of your data saved to CD or thumb drive, because you can use those Backup copies to compare to your current data to see what has changed. Hi, To my knowledge, the reason why this BKAUDIT file is in the same folder as the database is "what if you have more than one database?" Or if you put it in an "option" folder, how do you discriminate if again you have more than one database?
