For consideration: Proof of Lineage/Proof of Parentage Report. Such a report might be helpful for use for lineage societies such as DAR, SAR, Williamsburg Society, etc. The basics already exist with the Relationship report. The only thing needed would be the addition of source for parentage and a graphic representation. Just thinkin' Jim --- Please visit The Ball Family of Carter's Run http://www.ballsplace.com
To Carole Caruso Press F3 before you select people to keep the same BK number I do not have a list of all function keys. I normally add a special function key for things that most people do not need, but some people may need (something someone suggested in the past that I thought most people did not need). If a lot of people need something, I normally make it a visible option on the screen. Maybe I should make "keep the same BK number" a visible option. However it might cause problems if there are 5000 people in the database, and they select 100 people and then the database has 4900 empty records in it. So I sometimes make things not visible to keep problems from happening. Please - is there a list of ALL the function keys available for use with BK7? They are neither in the HELP nor the manual. I know there is a function key that lets you keep the same numbers when you split a database. Maybe I am just having a bad day, but I sure can't find this key in HELP, or the Archives, or anywhere in my own notes. The function keys are not much good if we don't know about them. If someone would please publish a list of ALL of them, I promise I will print it out. Thanks. Carole
John I am using BK6.6.18 and previously I used XP operating system but that computer died on me and now I am using Windows 8. Previously I created New Custom events for individuals and on the new computer I tried to recreate them again but I get a message about CustomEvents.BK which file I can't find. I vaguely recall a txt file with a list of my new events in them but my notes died with the old computer and I can't find it on my backups. When I now try to create a csv file I get this message; File BKPerson.DT6 Key value not found Retrieve error 4 xcode=0 What am I doing wrong? To Jacques Benadie 1. Be sure you have a current Backup of your data. 2. From the main BK screen pick File, Quality Check. That should fix the stat 4 error. 3. I will send you a private email about how to recreate your custom events file. I've just confirmed that Henry Young Mitchell is the 4th great Grandfather of (me). So I click the "Cl_o_se" button (or use Alt-o). The button moves in and out, but that's all that happens. I try the X at the top right - same (button presses but that's all). I try File, Close - nothing happens. (I expected to be taken back to the edit screen.) The Preview button works, giving me a preview of a printed page. Close from _that_ gets me back to the Compute Relationships screen. But I still can't get out of it. This happens not infrequently when I use the Compute Relationships screen - but not always. I don't know what triggers this behaviour. I'm going to have to crash BK (via Task Manager) to get out. OK, done that. Going back in, so I can tell you what version: 7.0.49; running on XP SP3. I'll just try the CR screen again: still works - but this time Close brought me back to Edit. Oops, some flashing of screens: I'm back in the CR screen again - and this time, I can't get out again. -- J. P. Gilliver. Pretty sure you're already doing this, but just in case... are you re-booting the operating system, especially after a Task Manager forced-close? Roy Marriott On 5/31/2015 4:37 PM, J. P. To J. P. Gilliver I am not sure what is causing that problem on your computer. As a test, go to the main "Welcome" screen and click Other, Compute Relationship and type in the first name, then the second name and see if it works OK. I will do some checking to see if I can duplicate the problem you are having starting it from the Edit screen. John Steed ----- Original Message ----- From: "J. P. Along this same theme I do the same, but with the surnames in capitals. No hyphens between names, and add yob-yod or yom as applicable for pictures etc. The notes I have converted all into internal notes in BK. Regards John Bright in NZ

Not always obvious which one, if you have lots of images attached to the person. I'm not sure whether it does something similar for text files. Anyway, you just edit the filename BK had to whatever you've changed it to. >Jim >On May 29, 2015 7:33 PM, Jude via <[email protected]> wrote: [] > it the best way. Can you change a file name on your computer rather than > through BK? I fear that's the _only_ way: I don't _think_ you _can_ change it from within BK. Though come to think of it, that would be a useful function to be added (maybe using the F2 key!). Another addition that would be useful in these circumstances is auto column adjustment: in a lot of Windows prog.s (including Explorer itself), if you double-click the cursor over the column header divider when it's a double-headed arrow (as would be the case when it's between "Picture file name" and "Ind/Fam"), the column to the left expands in width to accommodate the longest entry there. If BK implemented that one, it'd save scrolling left and right to see the filename. [] -- J. P. Gilliver. But the same question arises for other filetypes - in my case images of documents. I have subdirectories (folders) below my PICS directory; currently I have ones called baptisms, births, burials, census-info (that has further subdirectories), deaths, director.ies (for trade directories etc.), manifest.s, obits, passport, probate, stones, and a few specific ones. Within those, I use mainly the BK numbers - sometimes (without good reason) with a year added. In the marriage.s folder, if it's the page from the BMD registers it only has one BK number, if it's from the actual marriage register, it has two (e. g. "780-781"). Not necessarily the best solution: just what I do. I suppose the main question is, what do you anticipate _doing_ with your files? I nearly always access mine via BK, so it doesn't really matter what I call them. I still think it'd be useful if BK accepted _relative_ paths for files (for backwards compatibility it could tell by whether the second character in the link is ":", or the first was "\", or similar), but we've had this discussion before, and it doesn't, so I assume there's a good reason. -- J.
