    3. Hi All, The way I've dealt with not-ready-to-be-public notes is to create a 2nd or even 3rd internally saved note with the "Print where" column set to "Never print" or "Only if ask for 1." Perhaps, if re-naming were required, a custom option could be added to the options just my 2 cents, Batya -- Batya Matzkin Olsen, Concord, Massachusetts USA batyaolsen@gmail.com Researching: BIKOFF, EISENSHMID / AJZENSHMIDT [any spelling] (Tsikhovolya & Svisloch, BY), KAYOTSKY /KIATZKY (Vidzy, BY), KELMAN (LT), KLONER (Postavy/Smorgon, BY), MANPEL (Smorgon), MANFIELD (Sterling, Ill., US), RUNKIN, MATZKIN (Vidzy & anywhere), ROSENBLUM (Postavy), SCHARER

    3. To John Steed, Okay. Thanks John. And thanks also for letting me know where my "experimenting" ended up. I'm headed there now to clean. I might put a "heading" as the first word in the note so I can see it with the mouse-hover. Thanks for everything you do. 3. To Roy Marriott Sorry, I was mistaken. The Heading column is only for Pictures. However, if you have anything that is not (internal textfile) in the text file name column, then you do NOT have an internal textifle. Anything else is an external text file in some folder. If there is no folder name before the file name, then it is probably in C:\program files (x86)\Brother's Keeper 7\ which is not a good place to put text files. 3. Thank-you Otto, I had not seen the option for the 'mouse hover' which is helpful. Sorry, John for not being clear. On the 'Notes' tab (after 'Events' and 'Children') I quite like to make notes about research I have done so that I can follow it up (e.g. these are possible chidlren or spouses), or research that has disproved something (e.g. John Fraser who lived at XXX is not him because ...) to avoid duplicating research. Sometimes I have added an interesting snippet from a newspaper etc, but would usually put these in external files. The Text file name is always (internal text file) and it would be good to give it a recognisable name. I do sometimes attach external text files, but I am thinking of the sort of notes it would be good to just glance at during research, rather than more 'serious' files. 3. Ruth Both internal and External NOTES have a feature to NOT PRINT. So a note attached to a person is 'private', though it does export in Gedcom etc. To change a NOTE from Internal to External or vice-versa, copy the content to Notepad, Delete the existing Notefile then re-create the NOTE in the form you wish. Another method to have an 'independent note' is to create a the information in a text file or whatever format the add it to MEDIA. This does not transfer with Gedcoms or printouts. 3. To Ruth Wilson Can you explain a little more what you want? Are you attaching one note to one person? Does the note belong to the person you are attaching it to? Or are you attaching a note about person A to person B? There is a column called Heading where you can type something about each note. You can attach several notes to a person. Or instead of Internal notes you can have External notes. That will clutter up your folder if you have a lot of them, but you can do that and you can name them things like SMITH_Possible_Children.TXT When you add a new note, after you type the note, at the top is a button "Save to a File." Use that button if you do not want notes to be part of the BK database, but instead to be separate .TXT files. There is not a way to change an Internal note to an External note. You need to pick what you want at the time you create the note. 3. Thanks Barry; as I said it ow works;  however checking the Ged.lst there were many many _APID entries so I went looking for Ancestry's explanation and thought you might be interested.  It wouldn't have helped me but you're more tech savvy then I am - and may already know this. Fran * Thank you for posting your question about APID tags to our Community Forums. The APID tag is an internal value used by Family Tree Maker and Ancestry.com <http://Ancestry.com>. It is basically a database id number for a source. So the tag 3 _APID 1,7857::52344 is specific to your Family Tree GEDCOM, and references particular sources that are linked to individuals in your tree. Hope that helps answer your question. Sincerely, Ancestry Support Community Team * Tom Pears <https://support.ancestry.com/s/profile/00515000006gX2PAAU>(Customer) 6 years ago Hello Alan, Good chance we can dope this out, or at least get a little further. Warning, don't try this at home. 3 _APID 1,7857::52344 looks like we are dealing with 4 fields. The first of course is 3 _APID. I'm pretty sure the 3 refers to a Citation Structure and if it was 1 _APID 1,2442::0 the 1 would mean it refers to a Source Record. I assume citation is to a Ancestry tree created by a user and Source record is a public doc like census. I have not seen a 2 _APID 1,xxx yet I assume the 1 following the APID and before the , refers to the tree in your account, tree 1, tree 2 etc Note that the 1 _APID 1 only has one number and the 3 _APID 1,7857::52344 has 2 separated by the :: Lets assume the 1 _APID 1,2442::0 is a link to the Source record. The 3 _APID 1,7857::52344 is referring to a particular tree and then an individual in that tree? The obvious way to reverse engineer this is to create a VERY simple tree. Export the GED. Attach one citation to the tree and export the GED again. Feel free to contact me at tpearsATaol.com <http://tpearsATaol.com>if you want to play this game. If you don't like playing with computer code, just ignore this. And as the moderator has said, this is about internal numbers and could change in any way any time. It is just a fun exercise to peek behind the curtain.

    3. To Frances LaChance Location 3 is a "program" location that only I can use. Do NOT open your BK database with NotePad because that can damage the database. OK, did you have a blank empty BK database before you did the GEDCOM import? What is the exact name of the empty BK database folder that shows at the bottom of the main BK screen above "0 names" John Steed ________________________________ From: Frances LaChance <singer.35@hotmail.com> Sent: Monday, July 1, 2019 5:00 PM To: bk@rootsweb.com Subject: [BK] Ancestry Gedcom problems BK 7.4.3 - Registered user hi All; I d/l my tree from Ancestry as a gedcom and am getting this error when I try to enter it into a new database in BK: "Bad File Name" error occurred at program location 3 I opened BK in Notepad but can't figure out which is location 3, nor what it should be.
