I have noticed that BK's venerable image handler is both slow and uninterruptable when making the thumbnail in those circumstances, compared to almost any other image handler I have (such as IrfanView). [By uninterruptable, I mean if I go back or forward two people using the "<" or ">" buttons, and the intermediate person has such a large image, you still have to wait for BK to render it, even though you don't want to see it - the second ">" doesn't interrupt it.] I doubt this is your problem as I can't see why a rebuild should bring it up (it's always noticeable for me), but you never know. G'day John, I am using Brother's Keeper 7.4 for Windows on an IBM compatible under Windows 10. I have 123,680 names & 38,281 families in my genealogical database. I "Re-indexed my database" about 4 days ago and now the program is running extremely slow. I did the following hoping it would improve performance and get it back to normal:- * Reload upgrade for 7.4 and reindex - no improvement. * Uploaded and install the complete 7.4 program and reindex - no improvement Currently when Brother's Keeper loads it comes up with the message "Brother's Keeper for Windows 7.4 (not responding)". The details for the person come up after a while, this message disappears, and then there is a further delay whilst the program loads the family details, such as children, spouse etc. When the person's details do come up it reads "Brother's Keeper edit D:\PROGRAM FILES\BROTHER'S KEEPER 7\DATA\". I'm finding it very frustrating because of the time the program's taking to load a person's details as it's too time consuming and have no idea what's gone wrong. Any ideas on what the problem is and how to fix it? Using BK since the DOS-days, currently licensed version 7.4.3 on Windows 10 machine. My problem is a damaged file BKLocate.DT7. How can I get it repaired? Any help is greatly appreciated. To Briteyes Gee If you are on the Edit screen and you click Delete, Person then it deletes only that one person. No one else. If you "Delete LINK to Spouse" then no person is deleted, and it only breaks the link from husband to wife and from those two parents to their children. It does not delete any people. All other links remain, so all descendants remain linked the way they were before, except for the children of the couple you are unlinking. So those children only will be unlinked from their parents. All other existing links remain. Obviously any marriage relationship will be broken, then the children will be 'disconnected'. Only the ONE person will be deleted. All others, descendant & ancestors will remain, though not linked to anything. Brothers & sisters will not be brothers & sisters without parents. The descendants of the children will of course remain intact. I don't think the spouse and children themselves will be deleted. It just leaves orphan branches down from the children - and back up, if the deleted person was the only link to his/her parents, which will be the case if they had no siblings (that you'd recorded). -- J. To Paddy Brown Make a Backup to a USB disc and keep it safe for a while in case something goes wrong. Then Pick File, Split Database, and Create a new folder. Then if you want to keep the same BK numbers that people already have, press F3 (Function 3) on the keyboard and it will pop up a message saying it will keep the numbers for people the same. Then select everyone with Range of numbers 1 to the end. Then click De-Select option near the bottom right. Then pick Descendants of and pick the line you want to remove. It will make the number of selected people less. Then click Copy Then open the new folder that you have created and it should be everyone except for the line you de-selected. Then use that new folder (or you could Backup that new folder and then open your old regular folder and Restore over that one.) Is there still a free version of BK? If so, how do I download it? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks. Carole
Hi All, I have just that a whole branch that is in my tree does not actually belong. I now want to delete the whole branch. Please tell me how? I can see how to delete an individual but not all that person's descendents. Thanks, Paddy

To J P Gilliver It would not be easy, but it could be done. There is already a General todo list from the main BK screen: File, General ToDo and you can use that to save things you want to do that may apply to a group of people. Long ago a friend recorded his genealogy using PAF 2.31 in DOS, which he is still using. Now he wants to update to Windows 10 and use BK. My understanding is that you can create a GEDCOM file in PAF 2.31. (Is this true?) My question is can this GEDCOM file then be imported into BK 7 ? Thanks for any help. Carole
