    1. [BK] [EXTERNAL] Compare what I have in Ancestry to what I have on Brothers Keeper
    2. Hi all: What if any is the easiest way to do some sort of compare from my various relatives in Ancestry to what I have for them in my BK database. I know if I was using one of the Mormon genealogy programs that it updates both at the same time, but I am quite happy with my BK experiences over the years and don't want to change. Is some sort of Ged file for each perhaps a way, that would then require a ged compare for differences. I am open to ideas and thoughts on how others do this kind of thing. Genealogy is great but when information is going into one database and not the other it makes for some additional research which is very time consuming. Thanks for any help, Dave Bradshaw

    3. To Kevin de Vries Go to the main BK screen and click Help, Enter Registration Number Type in your numbers (from the inside front cover of your printed BK manual) That will turn on the extra features. If you lost your manual, send me a private email with your street address and city information. 2. John Steed
    3. To Keith Wellington Are you creating the Gedcom file in a folder on your C drive somewhere? Does person 1250 have anything unusual like a huge attached Note file? If you turn off the option to include Notes, does the error go away? If you want, you can make a Compressed Backup of your database and email to me privatly the BK7DATA.ZIP file and I can test it out here to see what is going on. 2. John Steed
    3. To Glen Ewert On some reports, there is an option to put "Event Notes" directly after the event, but I do not have any option to put the Sources directly after the event. I felt that the reports would look better having the events for a person together and not separated by several sources. However, I will consider making that an option if people would like it. John Steed ________________________________ From: Gene Ewert <geneewert@gmail.com> Sent: Monday, August 26, 2019 9:23 PM To: bk@rootsweb.com <bk@rootsweb.com> Subject: [BK] Individual Source Report I have seen several reports lately (Yes that awful Pinterest!) that help get a visual on the sources behind a person and their events. What I have seen very much closely resembles a "Individual Report" however instead of the sources printing as footnotes, they would print right with the event. I realize you can use the Individual report in the same way, but it would be so much more clear if the sources were right there for analysis rather than as footnotes. I tried several options with existing reports and couldn't find what I was looking for. Maybe it could just be a check box on the Individual Report rather than Source Footnotes., like In-Line sources. 1. [BK] Individual Source Report
    2. Gene Ewert
    3. I have seen several reports lately (Yes that awful Pinterest!) that help get a visual on the sources behind a person and their events. I did copy the Individual report to a .txt file and edited in WORD format: Born: 9 Dec 1853 in Trent, Rügen Island, Prussia 1,2,3,4,5 (1) Edited by Glazier, Ira A. & Filby, P. 3. John Steed and Sean Earnhardt, The F10 or shift F10 did not seem to work, however the left shift+ right click did. Sean's use of the term "phantom monitor" suggested that I do a google search involving that term and I found "www.technipages.com/bring-off-screen-window-back-onto-screen" which has several suggestions. The easiest one that worked for me was their "show desktop toggle" which consists of holding the windows key and repeatedly pressing D. Thanks for your quick response. 3. Bill Yes. I do all my editing on the desktop, export a GED than load it onto my phone and tablet. That way I am sure I have no database mixup problems, and I always have the latest on the devices. I can't run BK as its Windows only. I purchased an app call GEDExplorer (written by Sundin Software, www.sundin.nu available, on the Google Play Store). Cost the princely sum of $AU5. Well worth the cost. You export a GedCom from BK and store it on your Android device, then run GEDExplorer and read the GED file. It gives you most of the information available in your BK database, in tree, circle or data sheet format. The main issue is that it is just a GED reader and display. You CANNOT edit anything. I don't find that a problem, as I think you should only have a single database and distribute updates from there. This save you from the dilemma of trying to figure out which of you databases is the most recent, and do they both have the same data? Having said that, the author has said that editing MAY be added in future. Hope this helps Steve Boyd Melton, Vic Australia ----------------------------------------------------------------------

    3. To Jim Ramaley After you start BK, if you can not see it on your main screen, press on the keyboard F10 or else Shift+F10 FN+10 That should bring it back to position 0, 0 for the top and left margins. Let me know if that works for you or not. John Steed ________________________________ From: Jim Ramaley <james.ramaley@gmail.com> Sent: Thursday, August 22, 2019 2:06 AM To: bk@rootsweb.com <bk@rootsweb.com> Subject: [BK] multiple windows displays and BK quirk I recently obtained a Lonovo Thinkpad and a docking station that allows multiple displays to be connected. The arrangement allows 3 larger screens to be open in addition to the laptop screen. I use them for 1. BK, 2. Ancestry.com, 3. working text file, and 4. other internet lookups (often find-a-grave). It has simplified my work considerably because it is easy to move data between screens. But there is one quirk that perhaps someone has seen and resolved. When BK opens, it starts on the laptop screen, but I usually move it to one of the larger screens and keep my text files on the laptop where I can more easily control font size. The problem comes when I shut down the computer, disconnect it from the docking station, and, at some later time, restart BK on the stand-alone laptop. What appears to happen is that BK tries to start on one of the disconnected monitors. What I see on the laptop screen are my usual icons (including the shortcut to BK) but BK itself is not visible. When I click again on the BK icon I get the message that BK is already running and sure enough, in the start tray it appears but with a blank screen and when I click on it again, nothing happens. If I reconnect the laptop to the docking station, all is well. But if I need to use BK away from the docking station for a while (maybe a couple research days away from home) I don't have this option. I have experimented with several ideas and the one that does seem to work is to delete the options file (bkoption.d7) and restart BK. This options file is then recreated and seems to reinitialize certain processes that allow BK to start on the default (and, at the time, the only) display monitor connected. Of course there are a few options that I need to reset to my preferences. Any ideas? Or a better work-around? 3. Great tip Steve. Many thanks. I suppose periodically you could delete what's there and upload a fresh ged. -----Original Message----- From: Steve Boyd [mailto:boydsd@tpg.com.au] Sent: Wednesday, 21 August 2019 9:45 PM To: bk@rootsweb.com Subject: [BK] Re: Using a tablet Bill I use a Samsung Android tablet and phone on the road. I find myself car-bound for lengthy periods and even a laptop is too cumbersome to be practical. I want to be able to login to, for example, newspaper apps, which are only Android or Apple. But I would also love it if I could tap into (and edit?) BK. Or other Windows apps? My Windows use would not be resource heavy - BK, Word, Outlook. I am looking for others' experiences in using either a Windows tablet that can use Android apps or vice versa. (In my Windows PCs, BK's files sit under Dropbox.) While writing, I have 7.4 CD on order, updating from 7.3.1. When installing, given that the program Brother's Keeper is in the C drive but the files are under Users\Me\Dropbox\Brother's Keeper 7\Data\(databases), will I need any special installation procedure? 3. Thanks for your help John. I know most of that but it gives reassurance. Most of my tree is also viewable online via Wikitree if I need to do a lookup. If you have an Android tablet, you could put some reports (files) from BK on the tablet to view, but not change. In Brother's Keeper for Windows you can send many reports to a disk file. In the Descendant Report, Group Sheets, and Custom Lists, set up the report and then pick File, Create TXT file. In the Register Book, Indented Book, and Ahnentafel Book, set up the report and pick File, Create RTF file. Then load the RTF file into Word or Word Perfect. You can make HTML files from Group Sheet, Ancestor Chart, Descendant Box Chart by picking File, Create HTML files. For the Tree charts and Box charts, or ANY report you can send those to a file if you have a PDF driver like the free one from www.pdf995.com and set that up as a printer driver, then in BK pick File, Printer Setup, and pick the PDF driver and then when you click Print, it will make a PDF file.
