    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: ddroun1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bittinger/82.1.1.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: There's a village in North Rhine- Westphalia named "Bittingen," and the road to the village is called the "Bittinger Strasse." I visited the village one day during a trip through Germany- the terrain was remarkably similar to Western Maryland / Southwestern PA. Soest, a picturesque city a few miles from Bittingen, has a hall of records that goes back to the fourteenth century. Someone proficient in German might be able to find some links between the Western MD Bittingers and the German Bittingen.
