Author: CLEVER Surnames: Bittinger, Geiger, Bailey, Wells Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bittinger/109.2.2.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Lawrence Edmund Bittinger was married three times. The first wife was Lilly Pearl Geiger, daughter of Benjamin Turney Geiger and Angeline "Amanda" McIntire, whom he married in a ceremony conducted by Rev. C. F. Gephart in the Lutheran Parsonage, Rural Valley, on 06 May 1914, Armstrong County marriage license #13722. She died 11 Aug 1944. The second wife was Minnie Florence Stear, daughter of William Stear and Olive Wells, whom he married in a ceremony conducted by Rev. C. E. Butler in Rural Valley on 04 Apr 1947, Armstrong County marriage license #34062. [Minnie Florence was previously married to a Bailey, who died 28 Sep 1928.] Lawrence and Minnie were divorced 3 Oct 1958, Armstrong County September Term #120, filed 27 Jun 1958. The third wife was Mary Jane Wells, daughter of William Wells and Alice Anthony, whom he married in a ceremony conducted by Rev. Paul Mueller in Pleasant Union Lutheran Church on 07 Jun 1955, Armstrong County marriage license #39461. [Mary Jane was previously married to a Glover, who died 2 Dec 1946.] Curiously, the marriage application indicates that Lawrence's wife had died 17 Jul 1954. Each marriage is duly recorded. Obituaries often omit survivors, misname relatives and/or use incorrect dates. Marriage rcords are usually more accurate, which is why I find the 17 Jul 1954 date of death listed in ML application #39461 for a wife of Lawrence as odd. In my quest for 'all things waltenbaugh' I came across your post of 24 Jun 2007 in which Henry Clever and Cartherine Waltenbaugh are listed as the parents of Christina Clever (who was the wife of Jacob McAfoose). I cannot find a Catherine Waltenbaugh who married a Henry (or Heinrich) Clever (Kleber or other variants) in my database. A quick Ancestry search suggests that Catherine Schrecengost may have been Henry's wife. Can you help clarify this for me? Author: grimm149 Surnames: Bargerstock, Bittinger, Neal/Niel Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bittinger/82.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a copy of a letter by Emmert F. Bittinger, Ph.D of Bridgewater, VA 22812 August 22, 1983. "The Bittinger Ancestral Villages in Alsace". The letter goes on about his father, Rev.Foster M. Bittinger in 1933, then a pastor in Virgina researching the Bittingers living in Adams Co, Pa., Somerset Co.,Pa., and Garrett Co., Md. I believe Emmert F. Bittinger was teaching in Germany in the year 1982-83 for the University of Maryland Overseas Program. He researched on his own to find the village that Hans Adam Buoinger was born in. Only after a visit to the Cercle genealogue d'alsace in Strasbourg, a genealogist, Mr. Allonas Thierry discovered the marriage ,birth and death records for the Bittinger family and thus confirmed the village locations. Emmert visited the villages, Durstel and Ottwiller located about 50 kilometers southeast of Saarbrucken, near Drulinger,France. The wife of Hans Adam Buoinger was from Durstel and Hans Adam was from Ottwiller. There children were: ! Joseph Adam, John Henry, George Michael and Johann Peter. The village of Ottwiller is the place where Hans Adams Buttinger was born and where his parents, Peter Buttinger and Marie-Sabine Muller lived and where Peter Buttinger was born ca 1678. The letter goes on about the vist to the villages and cemeteries. No Bittingers are living in the villages today and the life of the villagers seem to belong to another century. This letter has been in my file on the Bittinger family since 2000 and I have kept it because it may someday prove who the parents are of John Bittinger of Armstrong Co.,PA. I have a death certificate for John Bittinger of Armstrong Co., PA stating he came from Frankllin Co.,PA. No parents are listed. He was married to Sarah Schrecengost and then to Catherine Jubee Bargerstock Neal/Neil of Armstrong Co.,PA. My interest is his relationship to the Bargerstock family when they lived in Wayne Twp., Armstrong Co.,PA. If anyone wants a copy of the letter by! Emmert F. Bittinger, Ph.D.please reply, the copy I have is very poor and I have done my best to spell the names and places correctly. I wonder if Emmert F.Bittinger is still living. I hope he did some follow up history when in Germany on the Bittinger family. I do appreciate him sharing his information. Bittinger, M. D. J. H. Bittinger, M. D., of Hanover, is a lineal descendant in the generation of Adam Bittinger (Biedinger) who, in 1736, emigrated from Alsace, Germany, to America, landed in Philadelphia, and settled first in Lancaster County, and in 1753 purchased a tract of land three miles northwest of Hanover. Adam Bittinger died in 1768, leaving a widow (Sabina) and children as follows: Nicholas, Henry, Michael, Peter, Marrilas, George, Adam, Christian, Frederick ad Eva. Nicholas Bittinger, the eldest son, was born in Alsace, grew to manhood in America, and as early as 1743, was one of the members of the council of the “Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Conewago,” now St. Matthew’s, of Hanover. For a time, when the church was without a pastor, he was licensed by the synod to read sermons from the pulpit and conduct other religious services. In 1755 he became a member of the Committee of Safety for York County, and served during a part of the Revolution. He bec! ame a captain of a company of Associators, and entered the military service. He was very successful in the accumulation of property, and at the time of his death, on May 2, 1804, owned several good farms within six miles of Hanover, and a number of choice tracts of land in Franklin County. His remains were interred at Abbottstown. He had a family of nine children, two sons, John and Joseph, ad seven daughters. Joseph, the great grandfather of our subject, was born February 26, 1773. In the year 1798, he became the owner of the tract of land purchased by his grandfather, Adam Bittinger, in 1753. He died July 26, 1804, at the early age of thirty-two years, and left a widow and five sons: John, Joseph, Henry, Frederick and George. His second son Joseph, the grandfather of Dr. J. H. Bittinger, was born November 13, 1794, married Lydia Bear, of Hanover, in 1819, and died September 27, 1850, on the old homestead of Adam Bittinger, the immigrant. He left twelve children: William, ! now residing in Abbottstown; Henry, born 1821 and died 1879; Joseph, g raduate of Pennsylvania College and of Andover Theological Seminary, became a pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Cleveland, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Penn., was a fine speaker, an elegant writer and a doctor of divinity; died in 1885, and his remains were interred at Hanover. The other children were Ellen, Edward (died in Chicago), Rebecca, John, Quiney (graduate of Dartmouth College and Andover Seminary, pastor of Congregational Church at Haverhill, N. H.), Daniel, Annie, Howard, Nicholas (now in Florida) and Charles Lewis, now in Florida. Dr. J. H. Bittinger, the subject of this sketch, was born in Berwick Township, February 3, 1852, and is a son of Henry Bittinger. For a time he attended Pennsylvania College, taught school in Illinois and in Pennsylvania. In 1871, while in the wholesale foreign and domestic fruit business with his uncles, George and Charles, in the city of Chicago, their entire establishment was burned by the disastrous fire that destroyed over $200,000,000 w! orth of property, and 7,450 buildings. Dr. Bittinger returned to Hanover in 1873, began to read medicine, entered the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia and graduated in 1878, began practicing in Hanover, where he soon prospered in his profession. After two and one half years of successful practice he removed to Philadelphia, where he did a lucrative business. In 1882 he returned to Hanover and the same year was married to Miss. Clara E. Bucher. They have one child, Lida. Dr. Bittinger is an active practitioner, is well read, and thoroughly versed in his profession and now enjoys a large practice. He is a member of the State Medical Society, American Medical Association and the York County Medical Society.
