Peter then moved to Orange twp Ohio in 1814. In 1820 Christian joined him in Richland and or Orange Twp Ohio. You will find they changed their last names to Biddinger. What is interesting Christian and his family moved on to Sangamon County IL and changed his last name back to Bedinger. Philip Biddinger stayed in Orange county with his uncle Peter Biddinger. My Bittingers immigrated in 1737 on the ship Samuel which traveled Rotterdam to Philadelphia. Orginally the surname was "Büdinger" and they were German speaking. The name became Americanized to either Bittinger or Bedinger. They were from a small town I would guess that must be in France but on the border with Germany. Area of Alsace? Ottweller? Dörschel? According to the Bittinger History the town was near Strasburg. After arriving to Philadelphia they made their way to York County, PA and bought land in Berwick Twp, which later became Adams County. The father Hans Adam was born 1698 and died 1768. The oldest 4 sons immigrated and they had 6 more children born in York County. Children were: Nicholas, Henry, Michael, Peter, Adam, Christian, Eva, Frederick, George, and Marillis. Much of the lines of Nicholas and Henry are documented in the history. Henry ended up in Shepardstown, WV. There is a SAR app that mentions the Rev war record of Henry's son George Michael Bittinger. He also became a Congressman from Kentucky. You can also read about them in the online book I gave the link to. I gather the ancestral home of the Bittinger (Büdinger) is all from that same area of Ottweller, or Dörschel, France. Hans Adam had a brother Peter born 1703 who also immigrated in 1737 but I have not seen what happened to him. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This gives details on the Bittinger's after immigrating. http://www.archive.org/stream/bittingerbedinge00bitt#page/n13/mode/2up I'm confused on the towns. In the booklet she states that Adam Büdinger (Bittinger) was a native of the village of Dorschel in the principality of Lichtstien near Strasburg. Your letter states that Adam was born in Ottwiller, and his wife was born in Durstel. Some trees say Adam was from Alsace. They were German speaking. In the time Adam was born 1698, what would have been the country or principality? Thanks. Pam Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Thank goodness he left a will there naming his children. I descend from the youngest Solomon Schroyer who can be found in Accident, Md.until 1870 and from there I have lost him and his wife Nancy Jane Sissney. I believe they both died before the next census when I find their children in other homes. My father and I were in Accident checking to see if we could find an old family cemetery, never did find it for Solomon & Nancy Jane, and I believe we happened on to the Schroyer family place. Clayton Schroyer was at his mail box and we stopped to ask directions. great luck he was a Schroyer. It must be the one you have mentioned. Does the farm go back to John Wesley Schroyer or to his father Jacob.I do not have exact info. on Jacob's father Adam. Would appreciate sharing what you have so I can compare and make sure mine is accurate. Solomon and Adam were neighbors on the 1870 census so perhaps where your farm is located is also where my ancestors resided? We were there but a short time and I took a photo of the two men standing on the road chatting. My father William Leroy Durst, son of John & Minnie Sweitzer Durst died in 1992 so it is that long ago. Can you tell me more of your family line. I am happy to share anything on my line if you wish. I have both Isabelle Schroyer wife of Benjamin Sweitzer and Rachel Schroyer wife of John Lewis Durst as great grandparents. So we both have Sweitzer & Schroyer families in our heritage. Yes the Poorbaugh Book is good and Wayne Bittinger's Book is excellent, I wish I would have had more info. for him when he was doing his book. I don't read or speak german, most of my tranlation has been done by a friend in Georgia. All the Birkenstock/Bargerstock letters I have I paid to have tranlated a number of years ago. I have proved the Birkenstock & Snyder families came from the same area in Germany and may have traveled together to America. They intermarried in Armstrong Co., PA and lived in the same area. Now the Bittinger family I have I believe came from Franklin County, PA. That county name is listed on the death notice of John Bittinger who married for the second time to Catherine Jubee Bargerstock Neal. Catherine was the widow of Robert Orr Neal/Neil. No parents were listed on John's death registation at the Armstrong County Courthouse, Kittanning, Pa. I'm just not sure who his parents are at this time. There is another Bittinger family, but I can not connect our John Bittinger to this family in Armstrong Co., PA. That would be the Cornelius Bitting! er & Margaret E. Baughman family. Cornelius Bittinger died 1900 and is buried in the St. John German Reformed Church Cemetery, Belknap, Wayne Twp., Armstrong Co., PA. Cornelius Bittinger parents were Charles Bittinger & Mary Best. The children listed to Charles & Mary Best Bittinger are: Cornelius, Sarah, Andrew, Margaret(Peggy), Lavina. Our John Bittinger was born March 2, 1832. Franklin Co. PA. and died April 14, 1897 in Wayne Twp., Armstrong Co., PA. Nothing in the history books on Armstrong County gave me any lead at all. I appreciate your information and will keep it on file and hope it will help in my research. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
