I am looking for the parents of Daniel BITNER/BITTNER.: b. 15JUN1807 ----------, Dauphin Co., PA m. 10MAR1831 Lewistown, Miflin Co., PA d. 31DEC1889 Loch Haven, Clinton Co., PA The above is according to his obituary and some family records. Government records have him listed at times as being b.1808 or b.1810. I have seen him listed incorrectly as 'David'. He moved from Dauphin Co. at an unknown time to Lewistown, where he married area native Eliza (Elizabeth) ROW/ROWE. They then moved to Loch Haven about 1840. They had seven (or eight) children between the approximate years of 1831 - 1848: -Samuel Lillie -William S. (Dr.) -John S. (Sgt.) -Mattie (Westbrook or Williams) -Elizabeth (Westbrook or Williams) -Robert R. or/and K. -Mary A. (Saterlee) Daniel was a master craftsman (painter/chairmaker). He was a Methodist, and purportedly the first to organize a Methodist congregation in Lock Haven. I believe both Daniel and Eliza belonged to Trinity Methodist Church at the time of their deaths. Daniel died in the home of his son-in-law, W.F. Saterlee, who ran the stationary store for Lock Haven. Daniel's Masonic order conducted the Highland Cemetery service. The G.A.R. Bittner Post was named for his son John. There is no parental birth place listed in the 1880 census. I do not believe at this time that Daniel is related to the nearby Beech Creek Township Bitners, although it is possible. -------------------------------------------------- If anyone has any information possibly related to Daniel Bittner's parents, please post to the list and/or email me directly. I am unable at the present time to take a research trip or budget money for copies, and would very much appreciate whatever assistance or ideas the list might be able to offer. Much Thanks, M.F.Weaver [email protected] --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! Messenger
Hi everyone I would like to introduce myself to the list. My name is Dee and I'm the new list admin. If you ever have any questions about the list please feel free to contact me at [email protected] I'm somewhat lenient with the mailing lists I admin. Slightly off-topic is usually acceptable, flaming is never acceptable (one flame and the flamer is gone). If a message goes through the list that is obviously not acceptable please do not respond to the person, rest assured I will take care of the situation. 8-) Most importantly, have fun on the list, and learn something about your ancestors! :-) Dee ListMom

Hello, My name is Robyn. I live in Michigan. I am new to the list. I was born in Texas. I was adopted into a wonderful family. My adoptive mother's maiden name is Bitner. Her grandfather was G.W. Bitner of Littlefield, Texas. I am looking for any descendants of G.W. (George) Bitner. I found online a "cousin" of the family. George's adopted sister's granddaughter. She has collected a ton of information about the ancestors and descendants of Joel Wilson Bitner of Vernon, Texas. Joel Wilson Bitner is George's father. I said I would collect as much of the genealogy information about George's descendants as I could. I have to act fast before my remaining connections to the rest of the family are gone. We don't have any family reunions or anything in the family really, so we have all kind of lost touch with one another. There is one person that I know of who has some addresses to some of the "rest" of the family. If this helps any, George and Lenora Bell Bitner, had six children. Only five of them lived to adulthood. (*I am not sure I have all the names spelled 100% correctly.) I am looking for any relatives of the following: A.D. (Albert Dudley) Bitner Jess F. Bitner Forest Bitner Jewel Bitner Dillard J.W. (Joe) Bitner (* At one time I had a lot of the names spelled properly. I had names and dated. I stuck it all on a computer disk. Well, we formatted the disk in such a way, that it holds more stuff. That technology is outdated now. I can't find a computer that can read this disk. I can't find that program to download either. And to top if off, I can't find the original hard copy that I typed in all the notes from. I know where it probably is, but it is buried around the house somewhere.) Any help in this matter will be appreciated. Robyn in Michigan

Does anyone have info. Several family trees show Catherine Bitner married George Crouse. George Crouse, born 1798 Cumberland Co., PA, married Catherine B, born in PA abt 1810. The 1850 census, Knox Co., Ohio shows Catherine B as George's wife. I have been able to track both of them. She died sometime after 1880. The problem I am having is the Knox Co Ohio Vital Records 1800 - 1882 shows Catherine Bitner as 3rd wife of Timothy Ross. Esther Crouse, daughter of George Crouse is married to Timothy Ross, and I have been able to track them also. Esther died after 1910. Does anyone have Catherine Bitner in their line that can help me resolve this problem. I try to document all my facts before I enter it in my tree, how do I do this?! Any help would be appreciated.

My name is Duane Bitner, Abraham is also my ancestor. My line of the family has an interesting history, do any of you know it? After his first wife died, Abraham (Sr.) married Ann(a) Barr, who had also been married previously. They had a son, Breneman Barr, and two daughters, Martha and another who died very young. They soon moved from Lancaster County to Quincy, Illinois for reasons we aren't aware of (please fill in any information in this story that you may know). However, Abraham was in failing health, our record states that he & his family returned to PA near Philadelphia, & that he died soon afterwards. Ann(a) joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints soon thereafter and slowly traveled west with her children from her first & second marriages. Our only information about Abraham's children from his first marriage is that they "stayed in the East." Breneman drove a team of oxen from Iowa to Utah at 11 years of age without mishap, stating later in life that "the Lord is ever mindful of the widow and the fatherless." After settling in Utah, Breneman married 3 times and fathered a very large family. One of his sons was my grandfather, Milton Bitner. I believe he was named after Ann(a)'s son from her first marriage, A. Milton Musser, another family from the Lancaster area. It is of interest to note that one of Breneman's daughters, Ada, married a bit later in life and gave birth in 1910 to Gordon Bitner Hinckley, who became president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1995, the same church Breneman's mother joined in the 1840s as a twice-widowed single mother. He continues in this role today, leading this church with a membership of more than 12 million individuals worldwide at the age of 93. I hope you have had the opportunity to see some of his television interviews over recent years, perhaps during the 2002 Winter Olympics or with Mike Wallace on 60 Minutes in 1998. That was more than I intended to write, but I do feel some pride in our family and Pres. Hinckley. We hold a Breneman Barr Bitner family reunion in Utah every summer, and I'm sure we'd love to have a visit from relatives or have the opportunity to attend any family reunions held in Pennsylvania someday.

Her maiden name was Siegrist. She married Johann Jacob "Jacob" Bitner. They had nine children that I know of; namely, Abraham (my husband's 2nd-gr-grandfather), Lydia, Leah, Elizabeth, Jacob, Carl, Henry C., and Casanna. Yes, Veronica was the mother of Casanna (Bitner) McCulley, wife of Jacob McCulley. She was my husband's third great-grandmother. Her youngest daughter and child, Casanna Bitner, married Jacob McCulley. Casanna and Jacob had seven children that I know of; namely, Lydia Ann (b. abt. 1825), James Thompson (b. abt. 1826), Robert Carson (b. 13 Jul 1828), Missouri (b. abt. 1831), Catherine Fanny (b. abt. 1833), Sarah (b. abt. 1835), and John M (b. abt. 1843). Who were the parents of your g-g-aunt, Mary McCulley? Given the year that Mary was baptized--1837--she may have been a cousin of the above-mentioned children. Perhaps Mary's father was a brother of Jacob McCulley, Veronica's son-in-law. If that's the case, then there would be no blood relationship between Veronica Bitner and Mary McCulley. Hope this information helps you a little. Sincerely, Carol J. Winckler (Mrs. Bitner R. Winckler) [email protected]

My husband, Bitner R. Winckler, is a direct descendant of Johann Jacob "Jacob" Bitner/Büttner and his wife, Veronica "Fanny"/"Ann" Siegrist through their eldest son, Abraham Bitner who married Elizabeth Porter and through their son Abraham Bitner who married second, Anna C. Hostetter. Abraham's first wife was Sarah Ann Retallick. You were wondering who Jacob McCully was. Jacob McCully was Jacob and Veronica Bitner's son-in-law. He was married to their youngest daughter and child, Casanna. I have done a lot of research on this Bitner line, and you can find all my work posted on RootsWeb.com and Ancestry.com.
