Author: flobitner Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.bitner/57.70.73.79/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hiram is my gggreat grandfather. From Hiram, to John (b. 03JAN1829), to John J.(b. 12JUL1864) the Bitner line flows then to Roland Fay Bitner (b. 1896 - d. 26SEP1960) to Ora Eugene Bitner (b.26FEB1926 - d.25JUL2001)to myself, then my son, and his son who is now 10 years old. Roland married a gal from either Rushville or Knightstown (not yet sure) by the name of Gladys Becker who was the daughter of Harry & Cora Becker. Harry was born and died as a sharecropper in that area of Indiana. Roland also has another son who is now 85(my uncle)and from whom much of this information was recently obtained. Roland had a daughter also named Maxine who married into a family named Houchens - husband was Howard who passed just a few months ago at age 90 in Michigan. The wife of John J. Bitner (1829) and mother to Roland was a woman by the name of Permilia who indeed was married 6 different times as a separate post inquired about. My Great Grandfather John J. Bitner drowned and left her widowed. I have in my posession an illustrated bible stories book given to my Uncle John R. Bitner by Permilia in 1935. Inside the cover it is inscribed "To John R. Bitner from Grandma Permilia Gedrtrude Smith, Oct 7th 1935. Permlia at that time lived at 103 N. Chester Ave., Indianapolis, Ind. and had obviously remarried a man named Smith by that time. I also have an original edition of the Brant & Fuller History of Rush County from 1888 (it has the first 38 pages and covers missing) which ties John Bitner back to Hiram and Lydia (Low) Bitner and also contains a photo image of John Bitner. The narrative on John Bitner is on page 371 and the phot is on page 670. I could use any available information from Hiram Bitner on back in time, as my book als just states that he was from East Tennessee and of German descent. George and Sarah are my grandparents too. And I've seen Georges birth certificate and marriage license to Sarah and he was born with the name Bowermaster and married with the last name Bowermaster. Nobody knows the story behind why or how it got changed to Darhower. Sometime in the 1930s before my dad was born. Because on my dad's birth certificate it states George as a Darhower. My dad was sketchy on how it got changed and said that possibly some of the kids didn't even know about it. We found the certificates in Aunt Shirleys house after she died. He said that his father was born to a Bowermaster, but left the family because of abuse reasons and was taken in by William Darhower as his own. So essentially he was adopted, just never officially. He changed his last name later in life to represent Darhower. Although by blood neither of us are Darhowers. In fact there are very few Darhowers around and theres not many that I haven't heard of and don't know how I'm related to the! m. I have never found record of the last name Darhower before 1920. Have you? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you would like to reply to them, please click on the Message Board URL link above and respond on the board.
