    3. Hello Tom, Public Graves are a polite way of describing "pauper's graves", in Flaybrick they usually hold about 25 people, occasionally there is a plaque on the wall to commemorate a person who is buried there ,but not many. I have several ancestors buried in them, but no plaques. Flaybrick is on the side of a rocky hill so there are rock walls dotted about, the public graves seemed to be put against a rock face, unfortunately I don't think that would help you find any other graves. regards John Oliver (Upton, Wirral UK) ----- Original Message ----- From: Webb/Davies Research <gospeloak@hotmail.com> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 23, 2002 6:42 PM Subject: [BKHD] Flaybrick Cemetery Records List , After a 9 month wait, I was finally able to look at the film of "Burials in consecrated ground, 1864-1883" for Flaybrick cemetery. The following entries are the brother and daughter respectively of my great grandfather Thomas Ramsbottom: No. 916 8782 # In Order Book 925 7 Buried 26 Feb 1866 7 Feb 1882 Name Henry Ramsbottom Elizabeth A.Ramsbottom Age 7 4 Months Mode of Burial Public Grave Public Grave Section 8 8 Grave # 187 473 Is there anyone familiar with the records for this cemetery that could answer a few questions: What is the definition of a public grave? Do families own the plot or are people that are buried in public graves just put in the next available grave? Is any of the information from the two records above sufficient to lead me to the rest of the family's graves? 3. I'm afraid I have to disagree with John's comment that public graves are a polite way of describing pauper's graves. During my researches, I have many ancestors buried in public graves....in Liverpool....and on checking the order books, I've found that some money was paid towards the burials as a contribution...therefore the balance was paid by whoever - church, local council etc. Everton Cemetery for instance has the private and public graves, and just recently I discovered that they also have a section for pauper burials. It's possible that other cemeteries have sections which cover the paupers, but you have to ask at the record office or the cemetery concerned.
