Thank-you Gil, that's just what I wanted .. I'll order that map. Do you know of any books about that area/time ? My mother once visited in-laws there .. said it was the poorest area she had ever seen .. and she came from a "poor" back-ground as well :-) Cheers Jane www.janelachs.de -----Original Message----- From: Gilbert Upton [mailto:uptonga@cybase.co.uk] Sent: Monday, February 04, 2002 10:37 PM To: BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [BKHD] New subscriber CARR FADDEN HASTY Jane It's Flamank Street which has long since disappeared. Not sure when - probably blitzed by the Luftwaffe in WW2. It lay parallel between Brook Street and Price Street near where they meet Duke Street near Birkenhead Docks. You will find it on the highly recommended 1909 map of Birkenhead (Godfrey Edition, Cheshire Sheet 13.03). This was a strong Irish Catholic enclave and noted for unruliness. Nearest Catholic Church was St Anne's, now closed. Field Street a couple of blocks away (also on the 1909 Godfrey Map) but do not know if it survives. My great grandparents who were Irish too lived there when they arrived from King's County (now Co Offaly) in the late 1880s. Gil Upton
Hi Jane No books specifically about that area that I know of but some of the general pictorial books of old Birkenhead might have a glimpse. I am sure one of them has a photo of St Anne's RC church. I think it still stands but has been de-consecrated and it's some kind of community centre now. That part of town had the poorest reputation in town both for the human poverty with the attendant social evils and for the very poor housing stock. My mum you to say, if I was naughty, that I was no better than one of those kids from Back St Anne Street (but she didn't mean it, of course!). Many of the streets and some original housing are still there so if you ever visit you can get an idea of what the place used to look like.
