Hello List, May I ask SKS if they should have a Directory for 1857/59 for Thomas FOGG, I have him as a stonemason, living at Poolton cum Seacombe in 1858. I would also like to ask here I have seen many times Poulton cum Seacombe. But what I have here is definitely Poolton was there both ?? Or is this a misprint ? Also can you explane what cum means ? I though it was a large building houseing many familys. But I see Gardeners Court Poulton cum Seacombe Victoria Road Poulton cum Seacombe Havelock Street Poulton cum Seacombe so is this like a district ? Pat and Bill pat0bill@telusplanet.net

Poulton cum Seacombe is th "correct" modern spelling, but I have also seen it Poolton (after all, the name comes from the "Pool" ie Wallasey Pool, the inlet from the Mersey that separates Wallasey from Birkenhead). "cum" is a Latin term meaning "with" - there are two areas of Wallasey: Poulton and Seacombe. I suppose they were once hamlets, then combined as a township, for administrative purposes. ( the other two areas of Wallasey were Wallasey and Liscard). I'm not sure when Wallasey split up into these three area/parishes/townships - St John's Liscard and St Paul's Seacombe are both early 19th century, I think, but I'm fairly certian that the townships existed efore they became parishes in their own right.
