    3. Hello Joice, i have an interest in schools and believe it is well worth trying to track down the records. if they do not this is the next best thing. . I tracked a school in Devon through the census returns, mainly because it contained many children born in India. No records exist for the school presumably because it was a privately run familly affair, having said that, i was able to get a general picture of it.The school was familly run and had a parent school in Exeter ,also run by familly members. It was fairly new in 1841and had grown rapidly by 1851. By 1861only two children from India remained,(oviously an effect of the 1857 Indian Mutiny.)although they had managed to take in more local children.By 1871 things were picking up.Somewhere between 81/91it started to decline and in 1901 no longer existed. living in the area i am able to add to this information.I recently did this for someone who had a decendant who attended the school. In the absence of records its the best we can hope for. Another School.,though not in this area,Kensington Proprietry School, did have records, and my brother managed to track them down.although i should add only for the earlier years, the later ones went missing. We were lucky and managed to get the records for two of our decendants.1836-1852. I am trying to find out now, about small schools befor the census began.Anyone got any ideas.?Looking for Macleods. If this reply to the list spreads out, will someone please tell me why.? It drives me nuts. annabelle from Devon.
