Can anyone tell >me the name of the church and what denonination it was, (or still is). > >TIA > The Parish Church of Birkenhead, St. Mary's, was built 1819-21, at the expense of Richard Price, then Lord of the Manor. On the 17th December, 1821, the church was consecraeted by the Bishop of Chester. The Chapelry or Township of Birkenhead was createc a parish in 1832. No Act has been considered necessary for building St. Mary's in 1821, as the incumbent was considered the legal succesor and representative of the old Priory (founded about 1150). The population of Birkenhead was growing rapidly at this time so, in the 1830s new transepts were added and soon after galleries were added to both transepts. It is, of course, a Church of England parish. Dave Burton
