Dear Barbara I believe the house was a grocers which also sold tea. The details arisising out of Thomas Wharton's bankruptcy indicated as much. Herewith transcript: Abstract of an Assignment from Mr Thomas Bell Provisional Assignee of Mr Thomas Wharton a Bankrupt to Messrs Hooton & Buckley the Assignees elect 1st February 1831 Indenture of Assignment of this date made between Thomas Bell the younger of Liverpool in the County of Lancaster Gentleman of the First Part Lazarus Jones Venables and Thomas James Hall, Esquires and John Foster Gentleman the major part of the Commissioners named and authorised in and by a commission of bankruptcy awarded and issued and in prosecution against Thos Wharton of Bidston in the County of Chester Farmer and Grocer Dealer and Chapman of the 2nd part and Marmaduke Foster of Liverpool aforesaid gentleman and William Buckley of Liverpool aforesaid Gentleman and Hat Manufacturer of the 3rd part Reciting that his Majesty's Commission under the Great Seal of Great Britain founded upon the Statute made and then in force concerning Bankrupts bearing date at westminster the 1st day of January 1831has been awarded and found against the said Thomas Wharton and directed to Lazarus Jones Venables, Thomas James Hall Esquires and John Foster, William Hinde and Charles Bird Gentlemen thereby giving full power and authority to the said Commissioners or three of them to execute the said Commission as by the same Commission relation being thereunto had more fully and at large will appear Also reciting that upon the execution of the said Commission it appeared to the major part of the said Commissioners in the said Commission named upon due examination of Witnesses and on other sufficient proof upon oath that the said Thomas Wharton did for the space of six years to the date of the now abstracting Indenture carry on the trade or business of a grocer by buying and selling Tea Sugar Coffee and other goods at Bidston aforesaid and did by such trade seek and endeavour to get his living as others of the said business usually do and in the course of such trading he became indebted to one Wm Wilson in the sum of 100 and upwards Also reciting that the said Commissioners did adjudge the said Thomas Wharton to be a Bankrupt Also reciting that the said Commissioners did by Indenture bearing date the 6th day of January then last past and made between the said Thomas Bell the younger of the one part and the said Lazarus Jones VenablesThomas James Hall and John Foster of the other part recited and also reciting that the said Commissioners had found out and discovered that the said Thomas Wharton at the time he became Bankrupt was possessed of (amongst other things) certain leasehold premises situate at Bidston aforesaid Also reciting that the said commissioners for the better preserving the said Bankrupt's Estate did nominate the said Thomas Bell Provisional Assignee of the Estate and Effects of the said Thomas Wharton and did order bargain and sell dispose assign and set over unto the said Thos Bell the younger his Ex, Ad & As and also for the better preservation thereof the said Thomas Wharton's Estate for the purposes therein mentioned Covenant from the said thos Bell to the said Commissioner that he would as soon as an Assignee or Assignees should be appointed join with these Commissioners in assigning the whole of the Estate and Effects in the said recited Indenture assigned to him and such Person or Persons as should be duly chosen Assignee or Assignees of the said Bankrupt's Estate and Effects Also reciting that at a Meeting of the Commissioners and Creditors of the said Bankrupt held at the Royal Hotel Dale Street Liverpool the 1st day of Feby 1831 pursuant to Notice in the London Gazette the Creditors whose debts respectively amounted to 10 and upwards did nominate and appoint the said Marmaduke Foster and William Buckley to be assignees of the Estate and Effects of the said Bankrupt It is witnessed that the said Thomas Bell the younger in consideration of 10 to him paid by the said Mamrmaduke Foster and Wm Buckley by the consent and direction of the said Commissioners testified as therein mentioned did order bargain and dispose assign and set over unto the said Marmaduke Foster and Wm Buckley their Ex and As all and singular the said leasehold premises and all other personal estate of the said Bankrupt's Estates and the said Commissioners in consideration of 5 to them paid by the said Marmaduke Foster and William Buckley have ratified and confirmed unto them their Ex 7 as all and singular the said estate belonging to the said Bankrupt thereinbefore assigned and set over unto the said Thomas Bell To Hold the same upon trust for the benefit of the Creditors of the said Bankrupt who shall or should thereafter in due time come in and seek relief by virtue of the said Commission Covenant from the said Marmaduke Foster and William Buckley to said Commissioners that they will with all convenient speed get in the property of the said Bankrupt and sell the same for the best price or prices they can get for it and also they will upon reasonable notice deliver a true and just account of what and how much money they shall have received by virtue of the now abstracting Indentures and that
