    3. I have an ancestor who died at 72 Westbank Road, Prenton about 1944. Can anyone tell me what kind of neighbourhood this would have been in prewar days? Was in middleclass, poor, upper class? Was this area bombed during the war? Thanks for any information Monica in Ottawa ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, October 17, 2004 4:00 AM Subject: BIRKENHEAD-D Digest V04 #229

    3. Hi Monica, I don't know of a Westbank in Prenton, but a bit further along is a Westbank in what is now called Devonshire Park (I knew this as Tranmere, but perhaps it wasn't). In the 1980s I lived on Borough Road, and right behind me was this Westbank. The houses on Borough Road were large Victorian semi-detached houses, and those on Westbank may well have been similar. Many of this type of large house were converted into flats (apartments?). Just a few streets away is St Catherine's Hospital, the old union workhouse. Going back along to the left is Prenton Park, the home of Tranmere Rovers Football Club. I have Google searched the street, as sometimes you strike lucky and you can find a property for sale. I didn't find any though. Sorry I can't be of much help. May be someone more local can help. Best wishes, Helen ----- Original Message ----- From: "Fraser & Monica Taylor" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, October 17, 2004 2:43 PM Subject: [BKHD-Wirral] Schools >I have an ancestor who died at 72 Westbank Road, Prenton about 1944. Can anyone tell me what kind of neighbourhood this would have been in prewar days? Was in middleclass, poor, upper class? Was this area bombed during the war? I lived at 4 Rocky Bank Road from 1959 until 1961. The address was then Devonshire Park, Prenton, Birkenhead. Before the War it would have been firmly middle - to upper- class housing. Cotton Brokers, Ship's Mastewrs, Shop-owners and the like. (Must have gone down a peg or two when we moved in !) As far as I know it did not suffer any bombing in the Blitz. The housing was mostly large Victorian or Edwardian houses - two stories plus attis bedrooms for the domestic staff. Very nice now actually - quite pricy I should imagine.
