I would agree that the house on the right appears to have been modernised in some way. Could be an extra storey or windows let in to walls of the loft. Compare the size of the people and the position of the windows! The chimneys seem to have been replaced in brick. Then the window on the top right has been altered, as if to put in a bathroom - a bit exotic for the late 19thC - and what looks like a pipe wouldn't be practical for the purpose. It looks to me like there is an animal byre on the far left, or possibly an old dairy or workshop. Then the house with the old thatch. Then possibly a passageway that has been filled in. I have had a bit of a trawl on the web, and think the man's hat is a 1870s model. So I have two theories. One is that this is one of the Clunies in Scotland, the woman is wearing a traditional farmworkers outfit (as worn by Bondagers) and the house was improved under the 1920s government scheme. If this is indeed Cheshire then it is probably a reprint of a photo taken two or three decades earlier - there were no postcards in the 1870s - and used for its picturesque qualities.
