I would just like to welcome new subscribers to this list and also to thank all of the subscribers and posters. This list has evolved into a great resource with a good spirit of helpfulness and friendly co-operation. It would be nice once more for us to know exactly what names and lines are being researched in the Birkenhead Wirral area from our subscribers so that new connections can be made and any lurkers can join in and take part in this community. Any listers who object to roll calls and the extra mail these posts generate into their mail box is welcome to unsubscribe and rejoin at a later date once the roll call has taken place. Please do not complain on list When posting a 'Roll Call' message please put Roll Call and the surnames you are researching in the subject line and the dates and other information about your ancestors in the body of the message. Best Wishes Caryl Williams List Admin BIRKENHEAD-L ENG-MERSEYSIDE-L UK-NEWS-EXTRACTS-L
I am researching the COX Family of Birkenhead.I have researched parents,William and Mary COX but son,Thomas and his wife Mary COX are proving difficult. Both families were living in Birkenhead in 1841. I am trying to find the marriage of Thomas and Mary COX in Cheshire or Liverpool circa 1822 and the whereabouts of Thomas COX in the 1851 Census. There is a Thomas COX on the Bebington Workhouse in 1851 but he was born in Liverpool and my Thomas COX was born in Cheshire.I suspect that my Thomas COX may have been at sea in 1851 or living in Liverpool. Any help appreciated. This is far out but as I know it, so I pass it on to you for your reference. I have in my house a pocket watch and photograph of a Gentleman known only to me as Mr Cox. He was a sea captain and lived in a very large house in Bedford Road Rock Ferry Birkenhead. This house became a Baptist Church with a hall built on for the worshipping area pre WWII. The house part was demolish in the late 1960's or early 1970's and new houses now stand there but the hall was taken over as a workshop/warehouse and although re-clad with new roof and sides still stands to-day. Capt. Cox was looked up to by my father, who I suspect ran errands for him and he influenced my dad to join the Royal Navy at the age of 14 years he was still employed as a civilian employee when he died in 1973. My dad was born in 1911, so the seagoing member of the Cox family you seek may just be the old man my dad befriended. Sorry if I have rambled on. Hey Sharyn, I have been trying (impossibly) to pursue things in Ireland and a lot of Farrels, including mine at some point, came from Ireland to Liverpool. In fact, in County Roscommon or Tyrone, Farrell is one of the most predominant names. I'm sure you've thought of this but just in case..... You've stolen our summer! Hi Caryl, you ask for lurkers to make themselves known, I am one of those so named. Have followed your listings for sometime on my Daughters Computer whilst babysitting but have seen so many questions asking for connection that I gave in last week and started to reply to some of them on list, usually with bits and bobs regarding this local area or any connections I have had with names.
