    3. My understanding is that a union school was the local school; not a church school, although religion was taught. The education Act of 1880 made it compulsory for all children aged between 5-10 yrs. Children aged between 10-13 yrs had to stay on unless they passed the satisfactory standard. So it seems strange that your ancestor was still at school at the age of 14 yrs, unless he was a pupil teacher, but then it would state that on the census. A Google search for Birkenhead Union School should bring you information about the school itself. There may even be school records at the central library. General ?> Hello References to "Something " Union I have seen in the past have always referred to the local Workhouse. Could the ref to the Union school been talking about a school within the Tranmere Workhouse, Church road, Tranmere? This might explain the wide spread of ages. I think that at the time the other schools would have been either church schools or Board schools. see http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/UnionsEngland.html#CMS and follow links from Cheshire HTH Dave Greenly [email protected] (Please note my new address) --------------------------------- ALL-NEW Yahoo!
