    3. Report of WW1 British warships that were sunk: On 2 May 1917 the Derwent, British, River class Destroyer sank, mined near Le Harve. Does this make sense re your records of where the sailor may have been? Cheers Marilyn >>> uptonga@tesco.net 8/11/2006 10:01 a.m. >>> Does anyone have any info on where I might find a record of an unknown RN destroyer lost at sea on or about 2 May 1917? A family death notice just says 'one of HM destroyers'. Presumably, as a security measure, they were not allowed to publish such details. The sailor in question, who was lost on board, is unknown to CWGC and so not on their Debt of Honour Register. Although I have given them the details of his name and the date, CWGC have been unable to make a connection with any other casualties at that time or a lost RN vessel. Thanks for any leads you can give. 3. Hi Marilyn, Unfortunately, there is no info about where it all happened. Presumably there was some clampdown for security reasons which prevented such things being published - I just have the family death notice in their local paper, as mentioned. The casualty is not a family member so is a stranger to me. Hence, no oral history to work with either. Your info looks spot on if only because of the date which is the one in the family notice. Even better that there's just the one such loss on that date. The sailor was a stoker so if it was a cataclysmic end to his ship he'd have had poor odds on getting out alive. Any info on casualty numbers you know of? Very many thanks for responding. I might just send the info to CWGC to see if it helps them.
