st. werburgh's is situated in grange road backing onto borough road opposite central station. grange lane ( or grange lane east) extended beyond cross roads at the end of grange road/argyle street continuing onto the main birkenhead/chester road. (the site of the main mersey tunnel entrance). even into the the early 1880's at the time of the laying of the foundation stone of the birkenhead town hall this area was still a green fields area.
