Grange Road a 20th century busy shopping area, but in the 19th century the area's fine dwelling houses stood proud here and prior to that it was, as pointed out ,originally green fields, called Grange Fields. Grange Lane it's former name, was the path taken by the monks of the 12th century Priory, Merseyside's oldest surviving building, to tender their crops and animals. The first railway station Birkenhead to Chester line was called Grange Lane Railway Station (1840-1854) when Town Station replaced it, 'Town Station' -Birkenhead to Paddington line,(1854-1967), which was accesses by road via Grange Road or Waterloo Place. In 1850 the south side of St Werburgh Chapel was not a pleasent place, and it is safe to assume that the orginal entrance would be in Grange Lane ( now road). ----- Original Message ----- From: <Morganjoemorgan@aol.com> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 14, 2006 9:39 PM Subject: [BKHD-Wirral] st werburghs > st. werburgh's is situated in grange road backing onto borough road > opposite > central station. grange lane ( or grange lane east) extended beyond cross > roads at the end of grange road/argyle street continuing onto the main > birkenhead/chester road.
