sorry Fred, I should explain. In the LDS 1881 census index, there are 12 matches for furniture+dealer+martha on the West Midlands disc, and the entry I found is the only one where the furniture dealer begins with 'V'. There is another John and Martha VENABLES in Birkenhead, with a quite different occupation. Further evidence might be found in trade directories. I also found the entry for Ann WARING which 'PINKS' found and thought it a likely match - Ann WARING here is a widow of course. As for the connection between the two, I wonder whether John VENABLES's mother was a WARING.
