Hi Fred, I am no authority in this area (Cheshire)so am answering you off list, but wonder if the name could be Venables. I read the other day on this list that that was a common Cheshire name and it stood out in my mind because I know of a Venables family here in Ontario. I kept that list on file and yes it is one of the families written up in the 1957 August edition of the Cheshire Life. Crewe Library= CL 1957-CRO August -VENABLES "There was from 1957 until 1985 an article published about old Cheshire Family names in most issues of the Cheshire Life. The back issues of the Cheshire life are available at Crewe library and those not at that location, along with the complete range are at the Chester records office." This info was in one of the postings just last week. Hope this helps. The name starts with "Ve......" but that is all I can be sure about. The address of Mr John Ve & Mrs. Martha Ve is 143 Price Street. Mr. V was a furniture dealer.. Possible readings of the name include Vemabled, Venabled, Vemables, Verables, etc. Can anyone, possibly somebody with easy access to the 1881 or 1871 census clarify for me what the name actually is. There is a second puzzle about this baptism, certificate which perhaps somebody can clear up. The baptism is for John Waring, the younger brother of my grandfather Andrew. The parents column of the certificate lists Mr. & Mrs. Ve.. but I feel fairly confident that the mother was actually Ann Waring. So what does this discrepancy mean? Were Mr. & Mrs. Ve the godparents? Was Mr. Ve the actual father? Why isn't the actual mother (shown as an unwed mother of John in 1881) listed? fred waring jfwaring@compuserve.com Any suggestions/speculations about the second puzzle would be appreciated. ============================== Visit Ancestry.com for a FREE 14-Day Trial and enjoy access to the #1 Source for Family History Online.
