Don't know what the exact arrangements, were but it is possible that the pension arrangements for the old railway companies were taken over by the British Railways Pension Fund at the time of the nationalisation.It is one of the biggest in the country so worth a try. Alternatively, the funds might have been closed to new contributions and administered by trustees until the death of all the beneficiaries. If that included spouses, it might have been going until quite recently, You might try the Inland Revenue on that one.
