Hi all, Tonight is our first meeting in August, we previously missed August out due to holidays. Well this year we are giving it a go and members and visitors are welcome to come tonight for 7.30pm at the YMCA, Manor Road, Wallasey ( just down the road from the police station). The speaker tonight is Roy Dennett with Tales of the Tranmere Workhouse. Parking is available on the grounds or outside the YMCA, Wheelchair access via a ramp and we are on the ground floor. Entrance £1 includes tea and biscuits. After the speaker feel free to talk to anyone ( were a friendly bunch) about your Family History and how we may be able to help you. Sometimes time is a little short but we will do our best, you dont need to speak to me in particular as we have many members who are very knowlegible about family and local history, just try and grab any committee member. For further details keep up to date on http://www.fhsc.org.uk/fhsc/wa.htm for Wallasey Group. Look forward to seeing you there Wendy Bennett Group Leader, Wallasey Group.
Grange Road a 20th century busy shopping area, but in the 19th century the area's fine dwelling houses stood proud here and prior to that it was, as pointed out ,originally green fields, called Grange Fields. Grange Lane it's former name, was the path taken by the monks of the 12th century Priory, Merseyside's oldest surviving building, to tender their crops and animals. The first railway station Birkenhead to Chester line was called Grange Lane Railway Station (1840-1854) when Town Station replaced it, 'Town Station' -Birkenhead to Paddington line,(1854-1967), which was accesses by road via Grange Road or Waterloo Place. In 1850 the south side of St Werburgh Chapel was not a pleasent place, and it is safe to assume that the orginal entrance would be in Grange Lane ( now road). ----- Original Message ----- From: <Morganjoemorgan@aol.com> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 14, 2006 9:39 PM Subject: [BKHD-Wirral] st werburghs > st. werburgh's is situated in grange road backing onto borough road > opposite > central station. grange lane ( or grange lane east) extended beyond cross > roads at the end of grange road/argyle street continuing onto the main > birkenhead/chester road. Hello List A recent message mentioned St Werburghs. Co-incidentally I was looking for info on St W's in the last few days, as a relation, Michael HANAGHAN was married there in 1850. Google revealed a few references to St W's Place, St W's Square etc, but not St W's chapel Can anyone tell me where it was - Birkenhead itself or nearby? Regards Bruce Interests: HANAGHAN (B'head area 1850s - 1920s), ATKIN (B'head & Liverpool 1880s - 1920s)
Dave You're probably right, it's down as Grange Lane on my g.grandfather's marriage cert., so possibly there was only one entrance at the time. Anyway, it hasn't moved (grin). Hello All, Can anyone help a lady who wrote to me, she is looking for a photo of the school that was behind the old St Peter and St Pauls School in Wallasey circa early 1900-1920 or thereabouts. Wallasey Central library do not have any neither does Birkenhead. If you have a photo of this school or church please can you send me a decent copy of it. I'm on broadband so file size isn't a problem. If you are scanning an old photo can you please scan it at 300dpi. Thanks, on behalf of this lady and myself for any help, Wendy Bennett Group Leader, Wallasey Group FHSC
I am hoping that there may be a list member who is familiar with or knows how to access the records of this church which are not deposited with the Cheshire Records Office. I have a rather particular query about a possible burial there in 1918. David

John, I have experience of such unofficial adoptions with a family from the 20th and 19th century. It would appear a Childs name is unimportant as long as those associated with the child know of the change and any such change is not done to defraud. I do not wish to go into a lot of detail for some of those involved are still alive in the case of the 20th century child. In our case the child was family and wished to change their name to the host family. This was done simply by informing the authorities of that change in writing via an official form. I also have another 'adopted' child from my fathers side, taken into the household at 6 years old in 1881 still resident under her own name in 1891 and 1901. In fact her cousin, my grandmother who was the same age in the host family, was in service and had left the host family home by 1901. I would also think that name association within families was very important in the 19th century and a name change to the host family of a destitute child taken in was rare, in my opinion? There would be a Baptism or Christening Certificate or Church Record, which would give an approximate age for the authorities to work from. St Catherines is still open today so local knowledge BT ----- Original Message ----- From: "john farrall" <jfarrall@cox.net> To: <BIRKENHEAD-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 05, 2006 12:05 AM Subject: [BKHD-Wirral] Searching for Information on Orphans and Adoptions c. 1850 > Listers, > I would appreciate some guidance here. Alice, I have been following your search for Kathleen Farrell. I find it interesting that my great great grandfather, George Farrall, also lived on Bromborough Road in Tranmere in the mid 1850's.
