    3. Colleen, Mary Flanagan, born in Birkenhead, married Patrick Doyle in Leeds in 1883 and they moved their family, including my father Vincent, to Philadelphia PA in 1910-11 where other Doyle relations from Ireland were living. I don't know of any relatives in Luzerne county nor any who are from Birkenhead. But I will be happy to do a little research for you and forward anything I find if you will respond off-list. 3. Well done Jen, that all fits nicely providing my Margaret's parents are William & Susanna. I've sent for it today so I'll let you know when it arrives. No wonder we can't find them on '61 or '71 as we've had TAIT, TATE, TART and TATER so far. I'd love to speculate further but it would only be in bad taste. (Perhaps it is TASTE) Susanna's birth date of 1827 fits in neatly with being 23 in 1851. The marriage in '47 and first born in '49 looks good. Then there is the bonus of Susanna's parents also living in William Street. Next week will feel like waiting for exam results to come through the post. 1. Re: [BIRKENHEAD] Margaret TATE born 1855
    2. You're welcome Doug. I have had a lot of help from the list in the past and it's nice to put something back when you can. Regarding William and Susanna Tate of William Street on the Cheshire BMD there is a marriage in 1847 between a William Tater and a Susan Oxton. Free BMD transcribes it as William Tate with Susan Oxton having the same reference number. Having looked at the index on Ancestry it is definitely William Tate. Looking on the Cheshire Parish Register site there is a Susanna Oxton born 11 Feb 1827 to Thomas and Margaret Oxton and the residence is given as Oxton (which is where Susanna was born according to the 1851 census). Hopefully when you get Margaret's birth certificate and find that William and Susan(na)are indeed her parents you will be able to verify the above information and add it to your line. I could find no marriage of Thomas and Margaret. Have just looked again at the 1851 census and Thomas and Margaret Oxton are living at 22 William Street! I really hope they are your TATE family as this info is too good to not belong to someone. Regards Jen --original message-- > *From:* "Doug" <d.s.mason@btinternet.com> > *To:* <jen@easypc.cix.co.uk>, <birkenhead@rootsweb.com> > *Date:* Wed, 27 Sep 2006 11:27:42 +0100 > > Jen > Many thanks for the very useful information you've provided. 3. Jen Many thanks for the very useful information you've provided. I will send for Margaret's Birth Certificate and it will be interesting to see if her parents' names provide me with a platform to come forwards again as well as back. With Margaret born 1855 it's almost certain we are talking about parents born pre-1837. I will try Central Library. I wasn't aware of the missing census data. I don't know where William Street was back then. Can't see one in my street maps from a century later, but I'm sure I'll dig it up somehow. It may not even be relevent, but if the birth cert gives me a William and Susanna you could well have hit the bullseye. Thank you once again for taking the time to help me. 1. Re: [BIRKENHEAD] Margaret TATE born 1855
    2. Hi Doug I have TAITs in Liverpool - Thomas Tait marrying my grandfather's sister in 1898. On the 1901 census they are transcribed as TART! His parents were William and Jessie (although she may be a second wife and not Thomas' mother who could be an Elizabeth). William came from Shetland. I know some of the 1871 census for Birkenhead is missing. It could be that your TATEs were living in the area that is lost. It has been pinpointed as the extreme South-East of the town in the area where the gas works were subsequently built. You can e-mail Birkenhead Library and ask them to look on the electoral roll for 1871 to see if your TATEs are listed. It will only give the head of the household but will confirm their whereabouts. birkenhead.ref@wirral-library.net (I made my enquiry quite some time ago and this is the address I used although it may not be current). There is a TATE family in the 1851 census living in William Street as follows HO107; Piece: 2175; Folio: 225; Page: 17 11 William Street, Birkenhead, St Mary William TATE head age 27 boiler maker born Scotland Susanna TATE wife age 23 born Cheshire Oxton Mary J TATE daughter age 2 Cheshire Birkenhead As you say you have a Susan in the family there is a possible connection here. Strangely my gt grandmother was also Susan ROBERTS but she came from Eastham. (Her grandmother's name was also Susanna). I cannot see anything for 1861 or 1871 under TATE, TAIT or even TART. At least sending for the birth certificate of Margaret will give you the parents' names and you can then tie in the above or not as the case may be. In '81 she is shown as Margaret Roberts living with husband John at 9, St John's Terrace, Birkenhead, age 25 birthplace Birkenhead. The birth certificate of her daughter Susan (b 22/03/1885) details her as Margaret Roberts formerly TAIT. I found a reference to their wedding on free BMD - Sept 1873- Liverpool 8b 227 - and her name is given as TATE. This spelling was confirmed on Lancashire BMD. Cheshire BMD listed her birth in 1855 and name as Margaret TATE. So there are a couple of certificates to send off for now. But I am still intrigued to know what happened to her in the '61 and '71 census. I've used Ancestry but not found a reference to a Margaret TATE or TAIT born in Birkenhead in 1855.
