    1. [Birkenhead-L] DODD in BIRKENHEAD
    2. Dave Burton
    3. I'm seeking information on the descendants in Birkenhead of John DODD (b 1839, Chagford, Devon) and Mary Ann AUSTIN (b 1840, Caernarfon, N Wales). They were married in 1864 at Llanbeblig, Caernarfon, and three children, John (b 1865), Owen (b 1867) and Mary Grace (b 1870) were born in the Caernarfon area. By 1881 the entire family was living at 15 Chapel St., Birkenhead, and there were four more children, all born in Birkenhead. They were: Sarah (b 1873), George (b 1876), William (b 1879) and Elizabeth (b 1880). Elizabeth (m Percy BURTON in 1910) was my grandmother and I know about her descendants but I have no information about what happened to her siblings, other than Owen (b 1867). I'd love to hear from anyone who can help with this. Regards to all listers. Dave Burton __________________________________________________________________ David N. 1. [Birkenhead-L] EASTMAN in BIRKENHEAD
    2. Dave Burton
    3. Looking for information on descendants in Birkenhead of Josiah EASTMAN (b 1822, Portsea, Hampshire) and Susannah BASSETT (m 1844, Stepney, London). They had three children that I know of: Sarah Louisa (b 1848, London); William (b 1852, London) and Esther Ann (b 1864, London). By 1869, they were in Liverpool, where Sarah Louisa married my greatgrandfather Thomas BURTON. The marriage certificate describes Josiah as an ostler. In the 1881 census, Josiah EASTMAN (a widower living with his 17 year old daughter) was managing a Cocoa Rooms at 187, Chester St, Birkenhead, while his son William EASTMAN was at 169 Price St, also managing Cocoa Rooms. William was married to Hannah and had a 3 yr old daughter Louisa. Although I know quite a lot about some of the descendants of Sarah Louisa EASTMAN, I know nothing about what happened to her siblings. I'd love to hear from anyone who can help with this. Regards to all listers. Dave Burton

    1. [Birkenhead-L] Wirral doesn't 'fit' into Birkenhead!
    2. Wirral doesn't 'fit into Birkenhead', .... it's Birkenhead that 'fits into the Wirral Peninsula'! Birkenhead - Victorian Boom town The settlement here goes back some years and Birkenhead Priory was established on the west bank of the Mersey circa 1150 or so. In 1330 Edward III granted the monks permission to run a ferry across the river. The low ground was marshy and most people lived on the overlooking sandstone hill in the old villages of Oxton and Claughton. In this period Wirral was neither a nice nor popular place - boggy and infamous for its bandits! In 1800 the Birkenhead population was only 110, and the church a ruin. It had been sacked by Henry VIII as part of his dissolution of the monestaries. Incidentally the mediæval priory has been nicely restored and is now used for concerts. There is also a small museum at the site. Across the estuary, early 19th century Liverpool was one of the World's most prosperous cities. (To its shame partly financed by the slave trade). Population and development money spilled across the River Mersey and Victorian Birkenhead sprang up at incredible speed (population = 40,000 in 1845). One innovation was the draining of the marsh including establishment of the world's first municipal park. Birkenhead Park was laid out in 1843-7 by Joseph Paxton with much landscaping, artificial lakes, cricket and football pitches and driveways. The 226 acre design was later copied by Yankee Frederick Law Olmsted in New York's slightly larger Central Park. Paxton himself went on to help design Britain's Houses of Parliament, and his own most famous work - London's Crystal Palace built for the 1851 Great Exibition. William Hesketh (later Lord) Lever established his business here in 1860, making soaps and detergents. The industry used north-west coal and electricity to make soda from the nearby Cheshire salt reserves. Imports of vegetable fats through the Mersey ports allowed manufacture of soaps and detergents. The most famous was the Port Sunlight soap brand - named the same as Lever's Port Sunlight model village in which he housed of his workers. The family firm eventually merged with the Dutch Uni to become the multinational Unilever. They are still here, and the village is quite a fashionable place to live as well as a significant tourist attraction. Lord Lever became very rich, and a Liberal peer. The famous art collection made by Lady Lever is in Port Sunlight Village, with a superb collection of British pre-Raphaelite paintings in particular, including Millais's "Bubbles" used for Lever's soap advert. There is also a fine Williamson Gallery municipal collection. Entry to both collections is free. Enthusiast Bob Speel has some superb pages on the Lever Gallery, and Preraphaelite Art in general. John Laird's yard made fine ships here from 1824 onward. Sadly, the Shipyard closed in August 2001. Perhaps its most famous vessel was the Confederate raider Alabama. She was purchased by the South in the American civil war, and had a short career sinking merchantmen of the Northern Union States. The Alabama was finally sunk by the Union battleship Kearsarge in the Bay of Biscay in 1864. The link with Merseyside is a curious one, but let's face it: Liverpool had an interest in the continuation of slavery. John Laird was Birkenhead's first mayor in 1877 and had already had much to do with development of the town and park. He was buried in the Priory grounds, and his statue stands in Hamilton square, one of the finest 19th century squares in Britain. Cavendish Road (ie here) was a development laid out with in the new parkland. Its first houses were designed by Paxton and his team and 1-5 Cavendish Road (1852) are listed UK Grade II Heritage buildings, as are many of the Park's other fine buildings. /We also have some retired warships well maintained by a local trust. Veterans only of the Falklands conflict, but a really good afternoon out for the kids if you are at the dock, or it's raining. A lot of the kit still works and the submarine is great fun. There is also a scuttled German U-boat salvaged from the sea bottom (rusty but mostly all there!) For more information on the Wirral Peninsula go to: http://www.vwlowen.demon.co.uk/wirral/index.htm and click on the various place names. Hope that this helps! 1. [Birkenhead-L] Re: OLLERHEAD
    2. Hazel Fuller
    3. The Pool Works would have been the Price's Candlemaking factory at Bromborough Pool. There was a small model village there before the more famous one of Port Sunlight nearby. I think that Ollerhead is quite a common name in that part of the world; I certainly remember hearing it when I lived in that area as a child. A cousin's wife was brought up there and I visited the village when she lived there in the 40's. The following is an extract from a site I found on Google by typing in Bromborough Pool. I use Google a lot to find information the easy way! Although Port Sunlight is famous for its houses built for the workers at the local soap factory, it was not the first such village in the area. Thirty-five years earlier, in 1853, James and George Wilson, who were directors of Price's Patent Candle Company of Battersea, were looking for a site to establish a new northern factory. Bromborough Pool was the site they chose for the Price's Candle Factory and the village that was built for its workers was (and still is) known as Price's Village even though only a small building with a clock tower is all that remains of the original Price's factory. The village was built in phases - the first being 32 houses in York Street for key-workers brought in from the Batersea factory in order to train local workers for the factory. Due to financial difficulties, there was a delay of 12 years before phase two was started in 1872 but, again due to financial problems, only lasted for six years. It was to be another 20 years before work continued. By 1901, the village had a school, a church, a village hall and a total of 142 houses. Since the turn of the century, candle manufacture has been concentrated at the Battersea factory. In 1937, the Bromborough Pool factory became part of the Unilever group and recently the name was changed to Unichema Limited. 3. Hi list! I am so glad you are now available! Birkenhead seems to fall into the cracks in all the other lists. As new info becomes available, you will surely be able to inform us. My interest is WATERSON. My husband's family moved from the Isle of Man to Birkenhead around 1840. His grandfather, Thomas Waterson, was born there around 1843, and his father, Thomas Luther Water- son, was also born there around 1884. Thomas Luther W. left for the USA before WWI, but there are still Watersons in the area. I would be interested in any and all info anyone could supply about the family. They were Church of England, and lived near downtown in a terrace which was torn down about 20 years ago. I hope we can find a cousin or two. This is coming from HOT sunny Florida! 2. George Ellis
    3. Hi list My interests in Birkenhead are as follows. ROBERT ELLIS was born 1819 in Denbigh, Wales, and its possible he died after 1913. He married ANNE SKETCHLEY late COTTON, she was born about 1820 in Barkby Leicester, and died Between 1881 - 1891. In 1861 Robert lived at 132 Beckwith St and had 4 sons, CHARLES ELLIS age 13 (born about 1848 in Liverpool), GEORGE ELLIS age 6, ROBERT ELLIS age 4 , JAMES ELLIS age 1, in 1865, 132 Beckwith St was described as the Robert Ellis Lodging House. I have traced him through the 61, 71, 81, and 91 Birkenhead census but cannot find him in the 1851 census in Liverpool or Birkenhead. He also had a stepson (THOMAS COTTON born about 1845 in Birkenhead) living with him in 1861, in theory his marriage should be between 1845 and 1848 but I have not been able to find it. WILLIAM McMAHON married to ANNIE BAILEY, they had three children, ANNIE, FRANK and HENRY, their first child was born in 1908 and I am looking for their marriage. RICHARD SIMMONS born in about 1829, occupation Baker, living in Birkenhead in 1881. I have the 1881 census CD's, the 1851 census of Birkenhead and Wirral CD's and the Bertram Merrell marriage index if anyone needs some help. George Ellis george@ellisg.freeserve.co.uk
