    1. [BKHD] BURTON in BIRKENHEAD
    2. Dave Burton
    3. I'm reposting this messgae, as so many new folks have joined the list since my last try. Looking for information on the descendants of Thomas BURTON (b 1842, Walton-le-Dale, Lancs) and Sarah Louisa EASTMAN (b 1848, London). They were married in 1869 in Liverpool but, by 1902, Thomas was running the Hamilton Temperance Hotel/Burton's Café on Bridge St., Birkenhead). He died in 1937 and is buried at Bebington cemetery. One son, Percy Eastman BURTON (b 1883) was my grandfather and I know about his descendants but I have no information about what happened to his siblings. They were: Clement (b about 1871); Maud (b about 1872); Eva (b about 1873); William (b about 1885) and Ethel (b about 1893). I'd be delighted to hear from anyone who can help with this. Best regards from sunny and hot Manitoba. Dave Burton

    3. I'm reposting, as so many folks have joined the list since my last try. I'm seeking information on the descendants in Birkenhead of John DODD (b 1839, Chagford, Devon) and Mary Ann AUSTIN (b 1840, Caernarfon, N Wales). They were married in 1864 at Llanbeblig, Caernarfon, and three children, John (b 1865), Owen (b 1867) and Mary Grace (b 1870) were born in the Caernarfon area. By 1881 the entire family was living at 15 Chapel St., Birkenhead, and there were four more children, all born in Birkenhead. They were: Sarah (b 1873), George (b 1876), William (b 1879) and Elizabeth (b 1880). Elizabeth (m Percy BURTON in 1910) was my grandmother and I know about her descendants but I have no information about what happened to her siblings, other than Owen (b 1867). I'd love to hear from anyone who can help with this. Regards to all listers. Dave Burton

    2. Dave Burton
    3. Looking for information on descendants in Birkenhead of Josiah EASTMAN (b 1822, Portsea, Hampshire) and Susannah BASSETT (m 1844, Stepney, London). They had three children that I know of: Sarah Louisa (b 1848, London); William (b 1852, London) and Esther Ann (b 1864, London). By 1869, they were in Liverpool, where Sarah Louisa married my greatgrandfather Thomas BURTON. The marriage certificate describes Josiah as an ostler. In the 1881 census, Josiah EASTMAN (a widower living with his 17 year old daughter) was managing a Cocoa Rooms at 187, Chester St, Birkenhead, while his son William EASTMAN was at 169 Price St, also managing Cocoa Rooms. William was married to Hannah and had a 3 yr old daughter Louisa. Although I know quite a lot about some of the descendants of Sarah Louisa EASTMAN, I know nothing about what happened to her siblings. I'd love to hear from anyone who can help with this. 1. [BKHD] Fancy Ball Liverpool Mercury 1833
    2. In one of the old Liverpool Mercury newspapers I have, dated Friday October 11th 1833, I've come across a huge list of people who attended the "Fancy Ball" in fancy dress at the Town Hall, as part of the celebrations for the Music Festival that were going on that year. The list is enormous and includes what each person was wearing and in many cases where they were from By 1833 the Liverpool Mercury was a broad sheet newspaper (earlier editions were tabloid) and this list spans across about three whole pages of the paper. , looks as if the whole of Liverpool, Lancs and beyond attended this ball!!!..except the poor people of course!. At some point in the future, I will try to put it all on web pages. but for now I'm willing to do look-ups from the list. Please mail me at cpwill5@aol.com, if anyone wants a look up from this list An example of the data contained in the list, here are all the MADDOCKS, they seem to be one family : MADDOCK Miss, in a fancy dress MADDOCK John in a Greek dress MADDOCK Mr Upper Stanhope street, as a Greek Cheiftain MADDOCKS Mrs John, as an archer Here are some snips from the large article about the ball: The Fancy Ball On this as, on former occasions of the kind, the amusements and enjoyments of the Festival concluded with a grand Fancy Dress Ball, on Friday evening, at the Town Hall, the use of which was kindly granted by the Mayor and Common Council to the Festival Committee for the occasion. This truly unique and fascinating exhibition has always been considered the crowning festivity of the week, and we are happy to be enabled to state, that in no repect, when we consider the number of people who attended, the excellence of the arrangements...... The Fancy Ball then, as it is most appropriately termed, has ever been considered the grand focus of attraction, and our citizens, their wives and their daughters, have always shown themselves most anxious to avail themselves of the opportunity which it affords to throw off their every day habilitments and characters and assume for the nonce, those of the heroes and heroines of history, fiction and drama........... Consequently as, for a long time previosly to the eventful evening, nothing was to be heard of but enquiries and anticipation concerning the fancy ball: go where you would you were met by the enquiry, "Are you going to the Fancy Ball?" and at every corner you witnessed, the busy notes of preparation.............. Tailors, mantua makers, jewellers and dealers in fancy articles of all description were put into active requisition...... A few days beforehand, very spendid dresses could be hired for a guinea or thirty shillings............. Without the doors of the Town Hall, every precaution was taken to secure order and prevent accidents on the arrival and departure of carriages Strong barricades, were erected in Castle street, Dale street and Water street, to keep off all the crowd A military guard was stationed at the front of the Town Hall, at the side entrance, and opposite the piazzas of the Exchange, and a strong body of constables, captains of the nightly watch, and dock police under the command of Messers PARLOUR, WHITTY and DOWLING................ 2. Barbara Lane
    3. Hi Mark, I confess this IS rather speculative, but as The Wirral seems quite a small area I thought it might be worth a try if you don't mind. I'm looking for Thomas G Blain who was married to Henrietta Bigland at St Hilary Wallasey in 1871. I don't have a dob as on his marriage certificate it just says "of full age", but I imagine from his wife's age it was somewhere between 1845-51 His father was William Blain. I haven't been able to find them on 1881 census, I think they may have emigrated to Canada by then. Just maybe they may turn up on one of your earlier ones, but I know it's a longshot, so if it's too much to ask, don't worry. Thanks anyway Regards Barbara LaneGet more from the Web. 2. Marjorie Mealor
    3. Judy, I checked the 1851 Census for Birkenhead, and living at 8 Willaston Place I found the following. H.O.107/2175 page 415. William Murray Head Mar 54yrs Warehouseman Porter born Ireland. H Murray wife 39yrs born Ireland John Murray son 23 yrs. (no occup. given) born Ireland Henry Murray son 19yrs Turners Apprentice born Ireland William Murray son 17yrs " " born Ireland Samuel Murray son 15yrs Grocers Shopboy born Ireland E Murray dau. 12 yrs House Servant born Ireland. F Murray dau 8yrs scholar born Birkenhead. S Murray dau 5yrs scholar born Birkenhead F Murray son 13yrs scholar born Birkenhead I Murray son 1yr born Birkenhead. Maria Christie Visitor Marr 28yrs Dressmaker born Ireland. Not very helpful only the initial given for a lot of the christian names, also I wonder if F Murray son's age is wrong, perhaps it was only 3 years, seeing that he was born Birkenhead. Did anyone find Agnes MITCHELL for you, I see that there are 9 Mitchell's indexed for Birkenhead, which I would be happy to check, if no one else has already done this for you. Regards Marjorie Australia.
