Can anybody suggest which Church of England a person living on Warwick Street between 1871 and 1881 would likely attend? I suppose the question is which church is nearest. fred waring jfwaring@compuserve.com

sorry Fred, I should explain. In the LDS 1881 census index, there are 12 matches for furniture+dealer+martha on the West Midlands disc, and the entry I found is the only one where the furniture dealer begins with 'V'. There is another John and Martha VENABLES in Birkenhead, with a quite different occupation. Further evidence might be found in trade directories. I also found the entry for Ann WARING which 'PINKS' found and thought it a likely match - Ann WARING here is a widow of course. As for the connection between the two, I wonder whether John VENABLES's mother was a WARING. Hi To All, if anyone has access to the 1871 census for Tranmere, could you please look up the family who were living at "Kindav Villa" Dingle Road Tranmere. This is an address from a marriage certificate of 1870. The McKNIGHT family should be listed there in that year, but I could not find them on the 1881 census. Regards from Anne in Australia.
Hello To All, I am open to suggestions for finding my COX family address for the years 1920 to 1931. I would also very much like to find some or their descendents. Two very kind people have looked up the COX name references in the 1891 Birkenhead Census for me, but my COX family who were all born in Leicester, were not listed. I looking for a Mary Ann b1855 in Leicester married to William Hodgkins COX. There were 2 children, W.H.K. COX b1875 Leic and Francis C. COX b1878 Leicester. (as in the 1881 census of Leicester) As far as I can ascertain, Mary Ann COX was living in Birkenhead in 1920 and at least until 1931 when her brother, Edwin KILBY died in Vancouver Canada. Mary Ann COX of Birkenhead was named as a beneficiary. When a sister Alice KILBY died in Vancouver Canada in 1931, there was no mention of Mary Ann COX in the obituary. Perhaps Mary Ann COX died between 1931 and 1934? I am trying to establish a link between this COX family and Anna ANDERSON who was born in Birkenhead in 1859. Anna ANDERSON married William BOYLE of St Helens Lancashire, and they were my G. Grandparents. Any help would be appreciated. Anne.
by the way, note the middle initial "W" for 2 of John and Martha;s kids..... I have HENRY EVANS who married SUSANNAH PEERS in Tranmere in 1894. Her father was John PEERS and in she was born in 1867 at Birkenhead. During 1871 and 1881 they lived at Seafield House, New Chester Road. Susannah had brothers Charles, William and Samuel - does anybody have these in their tree? Henry EVANS is harder to locate. He may be the Henry living at 1 Birkenhead Cliffs, Tranmere in 1881, aged 22. If that is him, his mother was Ellen and he had a brother John and sister Rachel. From his marriage cert, I know his father was WILLIAM EVANS, gent, deceased. But the age on his marriage cert does not add up to age on the 1881 census and I cannot find him on any other census. Any ideas most welcome!! Juliet

Hi Fred, I am no authority in this area (Cheshire)so am answering you off list, but wonder if the name could be Venables. I read the other day on this list that that was a common Cheshire name and it stood out in my mind because I know of a Venables family here in Ontario. I kept that list on file and yes it is one of the families written up in the 1957 August edition of the Cheshire Life. Crewe Library= CL 1957-CRO August -VENABLES "There was from 1957 until 1985 an article published about old Cheshire Family names in most issues of the Cheshire Life. The back issues of the Cheshire life are available at Crewe library and those not at that location, along with the complete range are at the Chester records office." This info was in one of the postings just last week. Hope this helps.
