Since I only received one -not quite relevant -reply to my earlier query, I thought I would ask again. What Church of England in Birkenhead in the mid 1870s would be closest to Warwick Street? It is not St Mary's since I have examined their records looking for a baptism and couldn't find it. If nobody knows could somebody suggest a web site which might know? fred waring jfwaring@compuserve.com
Greetings Birkenhead Members, I would greatly appreciate learning any information about my great grandmother Mary BEBINGTON Farrall. The only information I have is from news articles celebrating her 100th birthday and receiving a telegram from King George VI. The articles state that Mary BEBINGTON was born on 6 June 1850, in Lower Bebington. (She died 11 October 1950 in Oxton, Birkenhead). Since Mary was born before births had to be registered, I am at a loss to find her birth parents. I asked one of your members to do a search of the 1851 census for Bebington, from that period and this is what she found: I had a look for your Mary Bebington on the 1851 and this came to light:- Thos Green, Head Married 36 Agricultural Labourer born Bebington Hannah Green, married 40 born Stockport Ellen Green daughter age 7 born Bebington Robert Green son age 4 born Bebington Thomas Green son age 2 born Bebington John Langley stepson age 18 Agricultural labourer born Birkenhead Ann Langley stepdaughter age 12 born Lancashire Liverpool MARY BEBINGTON nurs(e) child age 9 months. On the line above for Ann Langley place of birth is Lancashire Liverpool. For Mary the enumerator has put a ditto under Lancashire and then a capital R? Not sure what that means. There are only two Bebington names on the census - the other a George is lodging in Birkenhead. Also what is interesting is that this family is at the same reference and page number as your Whitehead family so must have lived very close. The Greens are at the bottom of page 111a and top of 111b then one house uninhabited, a Davies family and then the Whitehead family. No address as such is given except for Bebington Township. For the record, Mary BEBINGTON is my paternal great grandmother and Alice WHITEHEAD (above) is my maternal great grandmother, who lived three residences apart. Obviously, my questions are many. First and foremost is who were Mary's parents. Since she grew up in Lower Bebington, perhaps she was baptized at St Andrews (CofE). What is significance of a "nurse child"? If she is an orphan would she be given the name of the town for record purposes - is this normal? As one can see from the above, it is difficult to decipher there information. I cannot locate the birth parents of either my great grandfather John FARRALL (from Manley) or my great grandmother Mary BEBINGTON (FROM Bebington) John and Mary were married in 1872: Cheshire Marriage indexes for the years: 1871 to 1875 FARRALL John - BEBINGTON Mary Tranmere, St. Catherine WR BK16/1/364 Any information the readers may find is greatly appreciated. Thanks again. Cheers and regards, John Farrall Burke, Virginia Researching: FARRALL, DAWSON, BEBINGTON, BRAITHWAITE, WHITEHEAD, SWINDLES, WHITE, HALL
Hello, I am new to the Birkenhead list and am searching for information on my Grandmother Elizabeth Williams. The only information I have on her is that she was born in Cefn Coed, Wales in 1875 and died in Birkenhead in 1922, does anyone know where Cefn Coed is? I was told that it is in North Wales, but so far haven't had any luck finding it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Best wishes to all, Joyce Walker, Brookston, Texas.
HI, I hope the listowner does'nt mind... I am trying to find an address/contact number for Leonard and his wife Madge, he might be in his sixties and living near Perth, Australia with several children and grandchildren. He was last known in Reeds Avenue, Leasowe in the 1940's to 50's. Son of Jessie Walsham and ?Johnstone. He had a brother Douglas and sister Rita, both now deceased. Is this too vague in terms of where he lives in Australia, is there anywhere more suitable to post a request like this? All help appreciated. Sue West Midlands. He passed it onto me and asked if I could track down the family of the soldier through the net. T To cut a long story short I subscribed to the Australia Rootsweb list (at www.rootsweb.com) and posted about the photo and how we would like to find the soldiers family and pass it on. SO many people wrote to me with helpful suggestions and addresses and through their help eventually we were able to give the photo to the soldiers family. The family including the soldiers brother aged 91 were thrilled both with the photo and information because we also sent off for the soldiers war record to the Australian archives. You could try this route of joining that list giving as much information as possible of the family's last known whereabouts in Australia, the list has subscribers from all parts of Australia and all over the world. Also there are newspapers in Australia that have "searching for" columns and pages, or even just a letter on the letters page might track them down, try an on-line search for newspapers for that area Alternatively- A friend of mine tracked down one of his lost relations by searching the on-line telephone directories for Australia, don't have that URL but I'm sure you could find it through a search engine such as www.google.com Hope this helps Caryl List Owner

There are a number of viruses around at present, one in particular is the Badtrans virus that can catch subscribers to mail lists because it *appears* to reply to list postings, has a list relevant subject line and has an attachment If anyone receives a private reply to any posting to this list that contains an attachment, do not open, inform me and I will temporarily unsubsribe the offending subscriber until their PC's are clear. Remember these viruses are not being sent via Rootsweb but from an infected subscribers own hard drive after they themselves have unknowingly opened a virus attachment Often people are entirely unaware that their system is affected so please do not *denounce* anyone publicly Do not open any attachment unless you KNOW it is virus free. - Keep virus protection up-to-date. - Do not post warning messages about viruses to the list, send them onto me instead Caryl Williams List Owner

Hello all I am looking for the family of my g.grandmother Wilhelmina SUTHERLAND born in Edinburgh in 1839. Her father was George SUTHERLAND and her mother Barbara DOBIE who married in Edinburgh in 1824. I have found three sisters for Wilhelmina so far - Elizabeth, Barbara and Jane born in 1825, 1827 and 1833 respectively. Wilhelmina married William Holtum HILLS on 21 Feb 1867 in Saint Paul's Presbyterian Church, Jackson Street, Birkenhead. Somebody on another list kindly looked up Sutherland in the 1851 Birkenhead census and found George SUTHERLAND aged 34 and William aged 28, being born therefore in approx 1817 and 1823 which is possibly too early for my family. I have a suspicion that this family were non conformist. Does anyone connect with them? Thanks Deborah
Thanks for telling us Viv Will certainly watch this and look forward to reading the book Caryl List Owner
Apologies for the double posting of 'Please Watch 'This Morning' etc; etc;. Dpn't know what went wrong there! Hello Listers, Many of you will be familiar with this signature: 'Bryan - The Celtic Laird', and for those of you who recognise the name, I have the following information: Bryan has, like many of you, been researching his 'family roots' throughout the length and breadth of the British Isles. More recently he has placed his energies into locating his younger sister and brother, who were both adopted in the late 1940's/early 1950's. As with searching ancestors, Bryan has hit many brick walls in his search for his siblings, but each brick wall has made him even more determined to discover the answers to his questions. .... If you watch the 'This Morning' Programme on ITV, tomorrow, Thursday, 22nd November 2001, you will be heartened to learn of his most recent success. He has been invited to appear on the programme, along with his sister 'Mary'! .... As someone, who has followed the 'ups and downs of Bryan's research, during recent times', I just know that I am going to need the box of Kleenex at my side! :)) .... A novelist couldn't have written a more poignant story', than the story of Bryan's life. In order to 'lay the ghosts', Bryan is now writing an in depth account of his childhood. I consider myself to be extremely privileged in that Bryan has shared these writings with me, .... writings which have me laughing, smiling, crying, .... so many emotions in each and every chapter, and I just know that when the final piece of the jigsaw is in place, and Bryan sends his book to be published, it is going to be a 'Bestseller'! I trust that the List Owners have no objection to my posting the above, but I believe that all 'Family History' begins with the 'Here and Now', and Bryan's story is most definitely the 'Here and Now'! .... "Thank you!" Vivien Blythe, Wirral Peninsula, "Happiness is helping a stranger find their roots!"
Hi To All, can someone please pass on a contact for The Hoylake Historical Society. Regards, Anne.
Hi Cath, I've just thought of a favour you could do for me if you would. I have a cousin, Lesley Mahoney who lives at 38 Manor Road Hoylake. I don't think they are computer connected, but they just may well be now. I need to know Lesley's father's parents names and birth dates. He was a COOKSON and I need the information as I am following the COOKSON line now. His name is John Isaac COOKSON 1905-1984, and I think the family lived at 47 Lee Road Hoylake. Do you think you could ring her and get this information for me? Kind Regards from Anne.
Hi Cath, great to hear from you again. Thanks for the offer of getting that book for me, it may have been a lot cheaper from the Market Street Post Office. But, I have just ordered it and received a message saying it has been despatched. It has cost me £20.90, when I treble that, to convert to Australian dollars it works out very expensive. I wish I had bought it when I was in Hoylake but I settled for several smaller books with photos of Hoylake which included The Lighthouse Inn in Market Street which was run by my G. Grandfather Joseph George BARLOW and the BARLOW Cottage, owned by my G. G. G. Grandfather Joseph BARLOW. Trust all is well in Hoylake and that the tide is still coming in every day. Anne.
Hello Fred, there was (still is) a Welsh Chapel in Westbourne Rd, (at the end of Warwick St) and also a Methodist Church on the corner of Eastbourne Rd and Claughton Rd (which I think my family went to, I can't find anything about it, also Oxton Congregational Church at the top of Oxton Rd., they would be the nearest three.
