They originated in Wallasey, Len Johnstone's mother was Jessica Walsham who married a Johnstone. She was born 1891, any connection to you? 1. [BKHD] HOUSLEY and JONES.
    2. Anne Nazari
    3. Hi To All, Can anyone help please. I have been unable to find the correct birth or marriage details for my William JONES. I have marriage details for several William JONES but cannot determine if I have the right one. My William JONES, a fisherman was the father of Ellen JONES b 1817c who married John HOUSLEY in Liverpool 1839. The addresses given on the 1838 marriage certificate were Carruthers Street Liverpool and Ray Street Liverpool. The 1841 Liverpool census shows several Ellen JONES, but no William JONES old enough to be Ellen's father living in Ray Street Liverpool. By 1841, my Ellen JONES was married to John HOUSLEY and living in Great Meolse in Cheshire. They started a HOUSLEY dynasty in Great Meolse on the Wirral in Cheshire. . Their son, John HOUSLEY and Margaret SHERLOCK had 11 children, 7 of whom grew to adulthood and produced their own families. Are there any HOUSLEY kin who can trace their family back to Liverpool please? Kind Regards from Anne in Australia. Researching: Lancashire: BOYLE, ANDERSON, INGHAM, GARNER, PRESCOTT and BREEDEN. Cheshire: BARLOW, BECK, BIRD, BOOTH, HOUSLEY, LITTLE, SHERLOCK, SPARKS and YOUDS. Kent and Middlesex: MARSHALL, MILES and TUCKER.

    1. Re: [BKHD] Word from the PRO:1901 Census
    2. This is the official word from the PRO on the difficulties people are having trying to access the 1901 Census available on-line at http://www.census.pro.gov.uk/ .............................................................................. ............................... We are very aware of the great disappointment that a lot of people have experienced in not being able to access the 1901 Census site or who have gained access to the site and then experienced difficulties in using it. We very much regret that this has occurred. There have been very high levels of demand peaking at 1.2 million hits at one time. QinetiQ, who are responsible for the site, are working with their contractors to resolve this as soon as possible. We will publish regular updates. Please remember that if you would prefer, there are microfiche copies available at Kew and at local record offices throughout England and Wales. Contact & feedback may be made via the address 1901census@pro.gov.uk .............................................................................. ............................. I notice they are taking the site down today between 1400 and 1600 hrs GMT for maintenance Caryl List Owner

    3. Well what a big disappointment that is. Can't get on Got On Searched No response, Can't get back on again So on and so on for 2 and half hours!!!! They said they could cope..... someone didn't do their sums right about the server being able to cope, as the first message I got at 9.03 this morning and for most of the remaining 2 and half hours... was SITE UNAVAILABLE! I think the words 'I told you so'... come to mind. Thankfully I am booked into my local library tomorrow, when they open, to view the microfiche for my area. Finally this experience gives more clout to the census being available at libraries and for purchase by individuals on CD or Microfiche. 3. Hi To All, can someone please help with the surname of Nancy b 1850 in Wallasey Chs. She married James HARDMAN b 1845 Gt Meolse Chs and they had about 9 children who were all born in Great Meolse Chs. I have not been able to find a marriage for this couple on the Free BD&M's on line or the Cheshire BD&M's Certificate ordering service on line. I am also having difficulty finding a marriage for one of their daughters, Ellen HARDMAN 1869-1917 who married George SHERLOCK 1867-1851. I could not find a marriage for them either. I have links through three of the children born to Nancy and James HARDMAN, but am stuck right now. I would really appreciate some help with these records. Kind Regards from Anne in Australia, and A Happy New Year To All.

    1. [BKHD] Re: BIRKENHEAD-D Digest V01 #96 1901 census
    2. All listers - The 1901 census came on line today Jan 1st. but it is over-loaded with requests and one cannot get to see the index much less get to see anything else. Is this census also available in local offices where someone could do a lookup. For example if I have an address in Birkenhead could SKS do a lookup. I am looking for one family that I found on the 1881 census and one of the family I found on the 1891 census which is the year she was married but before the census. I am therefore looking to see if she and her husband along with 4 or 5 children would be on the 1901 census in Birkenhead where they were married or in Port Sunlight where the husband was in 1881. They were in that area until they moved about 1902-4 to St. Helens where I know my mother was born. Here's hoping for a positive answer.. Joyce

    1. [BKHD] Names in Bebington and Storeton
    2. Hazel Fuller
    3. A Happy and productive New Year to you all. Here is a reminder of my Wirral family names: Most of them were in Hr. Bebington and Storeton but the DODDS came from Malpas to New Ferry/Lr. Bebington and there were others in Brimstage, Bidston, Neston and nearby villages. DODD, GO(U)LDSON, LEDSOME/SHAM, HUGHES, RIMMER, ROBERTS, WHITE, WILLIAMS We were probably related to half of Storeton and Hr. Bebington during the 18th and 19th centuries through the names LEDSOME/SHAM and WILLIAMS which are the main names on my mother's side.

    3. Dear Phil, Thank you for your reply. My Aunt CLARA OWENS married a FRANK HAMPSON and they lived in METHUIN St. Birkenhead. I think they had two sons geoff and peter, but as I came from separated parents, when I was about ten years old I do not know much about my aunties uncles and cousins. I have found out all of the OWENS childrens real names and spouses from the electoral role. I have found two cousins one is from uncle Alexander and the other is from uncle stanley but their are 7 more to track down. My grandparents were GEORGE OWENS and ELIZABETH OWENS nee BIRKETT. and I am the daughter of the late WILLIAM and MURIEL OWENS.nee WILLIAMS.My last Birkenhead address was Mallaby st. Hope this helps. Look forward to your reply. 1. [BKHD] The Ben Bulbin Hawk rammed by steamer "African" in Mersey River.
    2. Anne Nazari
    3. Hello To All, can anyone tell me the birth date and parents names of the Joseph ROBERTS in this story. I have all of these people in my "tree" but need a few extra details. George BARLOW was a crew member of the deep-sea trawler of 35 tons, named Ben Bulbin Hawk, commonly known as The Hawk. I would like to know the rest of the story if somebody has a copy of it please. Rammed by American Steamer The "Liverpool Mercury" March 9 1861. On March 3 1861 with a full load of fish, the trawler had proceeded up the Mersey River to Liverpool and, having passed the landing stage turned to enter the dock when she was run down and sunk by the American screw steamer "African" at 3.30 pm. Young William Jackson, the lad, sprang to safety on to the steam tug "Emperor" which also rescued Joseph Roberts a member of the crew. The members of the tug's crew fished Thomas Sherlock out of the water. He was still alive but died in spite of all efforts to resuscitate him. So he is described on his tomb stone as "died and not drowned" Thomas Jackson was later taken from the Mersey by the tug's crew, but he was dead. George Barlow could not be found, and it was not until (The rest of the story was not readable) I'd like to hear from the people with BARLOW, JACKSON, ROBERTS and SHERLOCK interests. Kind Regards fron Anne in Australia.
